I'm in UK where fuel is dear ($7.30 per UK gallon !)
As such I want to convert my mid 70's CJ-5 to diesel power during a full tub off rebuild.
Does anyone make adapters to mate a diesel engine to Jeep gearbox or diesel engines donor gearbox to Jeep transfer box ?

    Thnaks.

    Greetings from Boston!

I don't know of any such adapter here on the market in the USA. However, adapting the stock manual transmission to just about any engine is possible with the help of a machinist. There are also adapters available to quite a few US transmissions - look at the Novak or Advance Adapters web sites. http://www.novak-adapt.com http://www.advanceadapters.com/

Here's a page from Pakistan that may give you some ideas:

The Perkins 192 cid diesel engine was available in the CJ-5 in the 60s. Not a lot of them around now though.

    Theres a member "m38a1diesel" that's putting a 240D engine in his Jeep.

I've got McRuff hashing out a Mercedes OM-series to T90 adapter as we speak. He sez that once the "prototype" is up and running he can make more if theres interest, or send someone the CAD drawing if they want to make one themselves.

I've also recenlty acquired a Nissan SD33T that has a NP435 already mated up to it. Going to look at a potential recipient for that tomorrow, weather permitting...........

I just thought of something. Since paul is located in diesel Hilux country he could use what my original approach was going to be. Install a Toyota 2LT with the OTT Industries 22R adapter. Not sure how common the SM transmission is over there though.

Try Mitsubishi. There is a guy around me that has two diesels from a CJ3B. One is mated to a T90. They are from the Japanese CJ3B's

Would love to get my hands on one of those drivetrains, or a Mahnidra.

FWIW, I think the Mitsubishi version of the CJ3b was referred to as the J54.

I would think that availability of the VW diesel would be greater in Britain. Saying that I would think researching adaptation of it to the Jeep drivetrain would merit a look. I'd bet they might even have some north south applications that we don't see here.

Are there VW diesels fitted to RWD cars? I thought that all were transversely mounted FWD types, and would not be suitable for a Jeep. I was impressed with the Volvo diesel car that I rented in Germany last year, but again I wonder if the engine configuration would be suitable for a Jeep.

I believe there are some VW/Audi models on the European market that have longitudinally mounted diesels in them. In fact I know there is. Thats not to say that a transverse-mounted engine couldn't be made to work though. After all, if it can be done in a Sami or a Tracker.....

Here is the opportunity for a great road trip, or airplane trip!

On Teceira Island in the Azores, there were about 50 or so cj-6 jeeps that all had diesels and were right hand drive. They were Portugese Air Force Jeeps.

By now they have likely all been scrapped and are in junkyards on the island somewhere.

You could go there and if you are clever perhaps you could rescue 5 - 10 diesel engines that would have all the adapters and such.

I'm sure you could sell them....

And if somehow they are all crushed, the island is still beautiful and very relaxing.

I've already got 2 x VM 2.5 turbo diesels sitting in the garage. I bought them (very cheap) for fitting into my Range Rover to replace the 3.5 V8 but in the end rot had taken too strong a hold and I broke it for parts.
I've considered fitting one (same as Cherokee version) but the clutch bellhousing is a little too long and I'd have to start from scratch with the conversion.
Diesel conversions for Range Rovers are common and we have a wide choice of engines. Diahatsu, Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Ford van, Perkins & Peugeot are all fitted but Merc, VW/Volvo, Renault aren't normally used.
One thought I've had is using a Mahindra adapter with Peugeot 2.5 turbo engine.

One problem I have is registering in UK.
My CJ-5 is ex- Iraq (I assume war booty) and sold at military dispersal sale in 1993. I don't, therefore, have any papers / documents which means the authorities can be difficult. Think how you, in the US, would struggle to get a non US market vehicle such as a new Land Rover Defender registered to understand the potential problems :)
If I keep the Jeep basicaly original then I might be able to get registration but if I adapt too much then they can order a full inspection (which a CJ-5 wouldn't pass) before allowing it on the road.

FYI there is a site dedicated to Jeep/Diesel conversions...

www.jeep2diesel.org and their message board is located at messages.jeep2diesel.org

I am still liking the 4BT (Cummins) swap...using a Dodge bellhousing and an NV4500 tranny...but then I AM looking at doing the swap into a Scambler...so it's a bit longer... ;)

I believe the GM diesel 6.2 & 6.5 bellhousing are the same as a Chevy smallblock, as are the motor mounts. Plenty of adapters available for the Chevy applications.

That's true Hansh...but the Chevy engine is quite heavy...but not moreso than a big block.

That fact (existing swap parts) does make the GM motor quite tempting...
