Has anyone ever wired their dash using some kind of a plug(s) so you could disconnect the dash wiring at one or two points when removing the dash? If you have, how many contacts are in the plug. The PO had a jumble of wires going on behind the dash and I smelled burning rubber the other day coming from there. I just want to clean things up at this time and I thought this might be a good way to go when I want to remove and re-install the dash now and in the future.

4WD has a dash wiring harness that looks like it would be two plugs total.

Boat companies do this sometimes. Good for service but adds another potential spot for a bad connection.

I did that on Tonka way back when. I used a 9 pin "Molex" connector for the instruments & running lights, something heavier (don't remember what :( ) for the headlights. I didn't bother with the turn signal.

There were still the choke & speedo cables to deal with if you needed to pull the dash, but, that being said for the ten years or so I had it like that I never once needed to pull the dash off for anything. YMMV.

I would leave out the extra connector if it were mine. Connectors are well known failure points in wiring. The factory puts extra connectors in for ease of assembly and service (collision repair?). Rather than an extra connector, you could leave enough slack in the harness so that the dash could be folded down.

x2. I'd just leave plenty of wire available to hinge the dash forward.

Think of it this way, if you have a poor connection in the circuit (tarnish, dirt, whatever...), you've got resistance in the circuit. All that current going through that poor connection generates heat. Generate enough, and you've got troubles.

Besides, how often do you expect to take it apart?

I agree the extra connection has the potential for problems. I did find some molex connectors that I may use for some circuts but to get the wires to a central point I am going to have to add wire length anyway. It may be best just to add more and forgo the connector. I don't plan on pulling my dash apart often but I would like it to be a little easier to get at the wiring behind in the future.
