I know this is covered extensively but it's not quite a dead horse yet. I'm "mentally" preparing for a trans. and TC rebuild on my '59. Is it easier to pull the trans, TC, and PTO separately or together? Seems too heavy to handle together. Also a previous owner did some floor patching that makes the transmission cover dificult to get to. Is this something I need to do or can I do all/most of it from undernieth? I'm ordering the t90 video. Any other tips would be helpful. thanks.

I somehow managed to remove the Tranny and Xfer with the tranny shifter still in place, but I had all the floor covers out of the way.
Did it with both together, didn't have a PTO or anything. In retrospect, I made it a LOT harder than I should have by not taking off the tranny tower. I'd remove all the floor covers to allow full access. That and a tranny jack should get you there.....

I did a T-14 and D20 in my driveway long ago, and as I recall, you only need to remove the smaller access cover so you can remove the transmission top. There's no need to remove the whole floor.

As I recall, I muscled both the T & TC off - I used the OEM scissors jack to support the bellhousing. Not neccessarily recommending to do it that way, but it can be done.

Much easier to get at the bellhousing bolts if you remove the whole access cover.

    x2.

I would take the TC off first. The drive gear (I think that's the name) is a pain to remove otherwise, unless you have an impact wrench.

Or at least loosen that bolt before you take them off together. I took off all the covers and used straps over my rollbar and under the tranny with a floor jack underneath the x-fer to help me ease them down together, and to put it back in together. I couldn't get that bolt off with a 1/2 impact gun. Finally stuck the tranny and x-fer (which I had removed) under the front bumper with a 2x4 to hold it in place and got it loose with a big breaker bar. Probably a lot easier when it's bolted in place.

I had to carry my tranny/tc (which I removed together) into the local Autozone, where their impact gun actually busted my bolt loose.

What Bob and I are getting at is.... if the tranny is in gear (1st or Reverse, IIRC) while still in the vehicle, the bolt comes off much easier.

If you need to replace cluster gear be sure to order the 35 tooth and matching 16 tooth input for a lower first gear of 3.44 to 1. Search for recent posts about it.

Does all this apply to a T90/D18 combo too? My motor/tranny/tcase are all out of the Jeep and sitting in the corner, all still bolted together. So I should bust this nut/bolt/whatever loose first before I try to take anything apart? And what exactly is it that needs to be busted loose?

They are talking about the gear off the output from the tranny as an input to the tcase.

For years before I got an impact, Dad and I took them out complete and put it in gear and locked it with a wood wedge in the tranny. It then broke loose with a socket and extension.

sorry.... i followed Bob's lead on the "bolt" terminology. It is actually the nut that secures the drive gear on the tranny output shaft.

Rondog- you most likely have a small-hole Dana 18, so it is impossible to separate the tranny/ tc without removing the nut and drive gear.
