T-98 1st gear question

    T-98 /T18 1st gear question

    I took my T-98 down today to get the input shaft out to send to moser. Well I was planning on rebuilding it ,new syncros and all but when I got it apart almost every thing looked really good , except for the 1st gear. Im thiniking about just replacing the needle bearing , shims , input and output shaft bearings. But I dont know what to do with the first gear ,it felt fine turning it with the shift cover on and off. What do yall think?

    Hi, that gear should still be available, check a place called Hicks 4x4 in California, or 4xHeaven somewhere on the east coast (think the # is (800)800-1679, New York?), if you want to replace it. If you can't find their info on the net, drop me a PM and I'll see if I can hunt some info down for you. I used to rebuild these transmissions a lot, and I usually sourced the parts through these two places and a couple others. If I remember right, the last time I bought one of those gears it was about $100 for an american made part. Omix may be reproducing these gears at this time, but I am not positive. We did have one problem with an Omix 1st gear we put in my friends t18, the internal spines were overly tight on the shaft, which made his shifting difficult, but that was the only Omix gear I tried so I can't say they are all like that.

    However, even though I replaced that gear in many of the transmissions that I serviced for others it looks about the same as the one in my crawling jeep when I rebuilt it about ten years ago. My point is that since that gear is seldom used, except on the trail or in the McDonalds drive through, if you are on a budget you can probably run it, unless there are some broken or seriously chipped teeth. Those gears have a beveled edge similar to that when they are stock, and they become beat up like yours from shifting when the truck is still moving. On the other hand, little chips can always turn to bigger ones down the road, but the question is how long it will last, given the durability of these transmissions it could last an awfully long time.

    You do have a point , Im only going to use the gear is on the trail , and it is twice as big as anything in the T-90 lol. I did find out what happen to it , who ever rebuilt it last didnt put the denet balls back in so the gear was able to free wheel up and down the gear from the looks of it.

    I think I would run it as is...
    have seen some T90 gears that looked worse......

    My T86 gears looked worse and it ws still chugging along. I did go ahead and swap in T90 internals....b/c my cluster gear looked pretty ugly.
