Has anyone swapped the lower first gears out of a Pickup T-90 into their CJ t90?
Jeeptech shows that there is different ratio gears depending on application.

Does anyone know the part #'s of the different gears?

yes, i made this swap about 6 yrs. ago. There was a jeep shop in Hayward ca. with a couple of oldtimers that knew all about it. They had NOS and sold me a input and gear cluster. About $200. if memory serves.

It goes from a 2.98 to a 3.44 1st gear, thats better than a 15% reduction in 1st gear, thats a nice improvement.

If I'm looking for those gears, how many teeth does the input have and how would I identify the cluster gear?

Yes, IIRC. There's some coverage of this at the Novak site: http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/t90.htm

Almost all conversions use the T90J long input shaft, which only comes in the 18-tooth variety.

Try Archer Brothers I believe they had the new parts. Montana Overland might have them used.

With my T90 starting to pop out of gear, sounds like a rebuild is in order in the fall, using 3.44 gearing stuff- All parts under $200 per Krage and vintagejeepparts.com

Jeeptech says the 3.44 1st gear came in the pickup T-90, but novak says they came in the 63-71 T-90's. Anyone know who is correct?

I'll put my money on Novak. I have found the T90C 16/35 tooth gears available at several different suppliers for various prices.

FSM for CJ lists the 3.44 ratio, so definitely Novak.

You could always fix the JeepTech discrepancy since it is a Wiki. ;)

Novak says that the 3.44 was used post '63 due to the 4.27 ratio in the axles. I guess they didn't offer 5.38s as a standard option.

So it would be safe to say that my 65 cj5 with 5.38 gears is not a T90c, right?

My plan is to convert the T90 over and install a teralow gear set to reach a 58 to 1 crawl ratio.

    Thanks everyone for their input.

Those gears were used with rear ratios other than 4.27. I had a 4 cyl. 64 CJ-6 with 5.38 gears that had them. The ratio spread between 1st and 2nd was quite noticeable. It felt like a 4 speed with 3rd gear missing. The gears were changed when I did a Chevy V-8 conversion. Yes, as mentioned, the input gear has 16 teeth and the mating cluster gear had something like 35 teeth on the large end.

The way stuff gets swapped out I wouldn't call it safe to say much of anything anymore. I think we've all learned counting teeth and measuring is the only way to know for sure.

Archers is gone, they closed up late last year. Its too bad, it was the best place to get original parts.
