I discovered why my distributor won't index like the service manual describes. I found out that the cam/advance plate in the distributor is actually mounted 180 degrees out. I was installing new bushings in the distributor housing when the idea came to me - the first one in a long time!!! Anyway this distributor has been apart a few times by the look of it. The points mounting plate was installed 180 degrees out according to the manual and so was the cam. It could obviously be used the way it was but hey, it's always nice to match the way it was put together from the factory. Thanks again for all the help.

I'm located in Alberta Canada. We live about an hour south of Calgary (you know, the stampede city) and about 2 hours north off the Montana border.
