    Hi all,

I would like to find a tach that has about a 4000 rpm sweep (an L-134 doesn't really need 10,000 rpm's)

    Anybody seen any like this?

careful not to buy a deisel tach. They are not driven the same way electrical gasoline tachs are

Most diesel tachs are driven off of the alternator as opposed to a coil. Can't really see why one of those wouldn't work on a gasser. :?

JC Whitney use to have a 4000 rpm tach. It would be pretty neat to be able to twist it all the way.

    Auto Meter has some:
    in dash 2 1/16" 5k p/n 2697
    pedestal 2 5/8" 4k p/n 2890

probably more options but tried of looking, plus gauges are always personal choice check autometer.com

Some diesel tachs use an AC signal taken off a sensor mounted near the teeth of the flywheel. They will work on gas engines, as long as you have the sensor; and are willing to drill the bell housing; and the flywheel has the same number of teeth the tach/sensor combo is set up for. I haven't played with the alternator type - but I guess if they have a way to calibrate so that engine RPM and alternator RPM are ratio-corrected, they would work on gas engines as well.

Kinda off the subject, but my chrome autometer gauges in my CJ7 rusted terribly in about 2 years, the jeep was in Hawaii and I left the top off a lot. On the other hand, some old stewart warner gauges I got off ebay have a stainless bezel (like the factory 76-86 Jeep gauges) so they are holding up well. I love the autometer in my K5 Blazer, but for a Jeep maybe not. I do have the Z series (black bezel) in my CJ5 and they are holding up well.

I agree that most applications don't even need a 8000 rpm tach. I bought an autometer 6000 rpm tach for my big block K5 and love it.
