Me and my dad messed with the jeep today and got it running. After i filled the points(they werent burned to badly cleaned up after a stroke or two) cleaned and gapped plugs, and roughly set the timing it fired right up. it was actually idling but slightly rough so we tried to check the timing but the light was broken so we will get it right when we pick up a new light

Pertronix means you'll never mess with points again! ;)

pertronix would be nice but the jeep is just driven around my farm and doubles as a tractor once in a while so it really isnt a priority. Maybe once i finish my '60 gmc i'll give it a thought.

F-heads rule! I have three in my garage right now; my original motor and two spares that I picked up for free. Have the opportunity for another free motor if I can get the damn thing loaded into my pickup somehow. Hope he still has it.

Pertronix $85, set of points $4, let's see how many years will that be before it pays for itself?

Point taken. However, the Pertronix IS a set-it-and-forget-it deal. It also made a world of difference in the low-RPM idle & run quality on my L-134.

I also have an old buddy who has a distributor machine (remember those?) in his garage who recurved my NOS Autolite distributor to bring the mechanical advance in a bit earlier than stock, and he set it up for how I drive my Jeep. MAN does my old flattie Purrrr now!

I might add that a set of points will fry also if one leaves the key on with the engine not running... AMHIKTY! ;)
