Guys with :v6: and fenderwell headers

    I'm fighting with exhaust hangers. I finally (before Tellico last May) built these out of 1" angle, cut and bent to bolt on top of the frame and to the side. The driver side keeps breaking the thru the side of the frame bolt,, and I keep replaceing it. But a little while ago I noticed that the angle iron (flat where I had cut and bent it) work hardened and broke... I'll figure something out I suppose, but was wondering what some of you guys have done to hang (support) the exhaust...

    A few things Patrick:

    1. Are you using "header buddies"? I'm thinking that the normal engine movement is working the exhaust back and forth (especially with an odd-fire motor) that is causing the wear on the bracket. Header buddies might allow some movement at the muffler/header joint.

    2. Another possible solution might be to use a flex-joint at the header/muffler juncture like a lot of FWD cars have in their exhaust, to provide that flex instead of the bracket.

    3. That bracket seems to be cantilevered quite a bit. How about triangulating it a bit top help bear the weight better?

    i bolted my exhaust hanger throguh the body. it worked just fine for me. the hanger was pretty much vertical

    I think a quick visit to your local muff shop my be in order.
    look at all they have to offer, not just FLAPS.
    although my pipes run all the way out the back, I used the import type hanger: molded rubber block type insulator; with round rods welded/bolted to the frame/ex pipe inserted into the molded rubber block hangar.
    I'm surprsied yours cracked, even with the rubber to allow flex/movement.

    I've seen about every kind of hanger there is.... These don't really need to support any weight, just keep the vibes down to a minimum thru the headers.. Steve, you are right, a cantilever or brace would help, but I don't want to put more holes in the frame...

    why not bolt throguh the floor? it will hold the weight very easy

    Put a rubber insulator biscuit between mount and frame and check nuts often.

    I *really* don't want to hang the exhaust from the body....
    David, you may have something here. I do check my nuts often.......:D
    And if I use nylocks............

    I've used the same type of hanger on mine for years without it pulling out. And the muffler shop attached them with large self-tapping screws! You don't have a loose motor mount causing increased flex in your exhaust, do you? Are you using a Grade8 bolt with washers? Is your bracket not long enough, causing it to be under constant stress (even at idle)? There's got to be some other reason for the mounts to keep breaking.

    Well, I welded it back together. I also welded it where I had cut and bent the angle to bolt on the top of the frame and the side of the frame. I also made it have a little less tension on the hanger, in other words, it was actually pulling pretty hard on the pipe/ muffler/ header...... It should last a while....
