Go Figure....engine mount question ????

    Hey all and happy holidays.

    I recently had a F134 built to replace the old one (frozen) in my CJ3b. All was well, got the rebuilt engine all dressed and the old engine out. cleaned and painted the engine compartment. Whilst having a go at the engine installation, it became painfully apparent that the rebuild had an early CJ5 drivers side mounting plate. The drivers side mount on the early CJ5's has the bend where the bolt goes reversed from that of the CJ3b.

    many beers (hey where did the beer icon go??) later, I called the engine shop and dicussed removing the plate. You gotta open up the frontend, probably bust and remove the fiber timing gear.

    So.... question : Is there an alternative solution such as an adapter plate or bracket bolt on??

    It's just swinging there on the hoist in limbo now. any help or advise appreciated mucho cervesa.

    Hmmm, interesting. My CJ3B and CJ5 both have the same mounting plate. Driver side bend faces forward, passenger side faces to rear.

    Early flatties all had both facing to the rear...

    What was the "new" engine originally out of?

    Just thinking out loud here, but is there a chance that your "new" F-head had been transplanted into a flattie at some point and had the plate changed then?

    Yeah, I've seen this discussed on WillysTech before. Seems that you have to pay attention to which plate you have.

    Don't know about any adaptors. If necessity is the mother of invention, looks like you'll have to be the proud papa!

    my buddy had the same issue on his 3B. Original engine was frozen and he replaced it with a donor. Came from a wagon and had the wrong front plate for a CJ. Built an adapter plate to make it work, basically flat stock. If I understand you correctly you need to extend your plate to make it reach your motor mount? You can change the front plateeasily enuff but check with your rebuilder if they'll stand behind it if you open it up. I've removed 2 timing gears without any damage at all.

    Easiest way would be to just weld a tab on the mounting plate that faces the right direction

    Even easier - cut a tab out of 1/4-inch plate that is twice the width of the stock one. Bore two holes in it; one for the engine mount and the other for a stout bolt to bolt the "adaptor" tot he stock mounting ear. Lifting the ngine up 1/4" isn't going to mess anything up. ;)

    Thanks guys, I've got a correct plate, so I think I'll yank 'er out & replace. If I had not cleaned and painted the engine compartment I would just weld a reverse plate on w/ a gusset. I've got a few photos
    (.jpeg) but not sure how to attacch them here??
