Thanks Warloch! I might possibly be interested in taking this unit off your hands. In the meantime, I hope you don't mind me dinging ya with a few more questions...

    Is the input shaft 1 1/8" x 10 spline?

Could I see a pic of the other side of the case (the side that's facing the wall in the pictures)?

How deep is the bellhousing in the last pic (the more precise you can get the better, although it need not be 'perfect' at this point)?

According to both napaonline.com and the Sachs catalog, the Mercedes 240D clutch disc is 1 1/8" x 10 spline. If they are indeed correct, then that should mean I can use a T90 long shaft or almost any Bowtie tranny and keep the clutch parts all Benzo! Coulda kept the SM465 that I already had, but oh well.

It just sounds too good to be true! I figured for sure it would have been some oddball metric size.

I doubt very seriously that a Mercedes has a 1 1/8 -10 spline clutch disk since that doesn't fall into any metric sizing and theres no way there gonna use standard components in a German motor. Not to mention that there 10 splines will not be SAE splines and will be totally different. I would forget about hoping to use the stock german clutch, it just ain't gonna happen, at least not mated to an Amercian built trans.

I dunno Mike, one of the guys @ the Mercedes Shop forum said he used a Chevy clutch alignment tool when he replaced his 240D clutch!

Don't get me wrong, it sounds too good to be true to me too. But I'm trying to get some of those guys to mesure the stuff in their spare parts stashes to verify one way or the other.

If thats the case just take them your t90 or input shaft and let them slide the clutch up on the splines and forgoe measuring. That way you really know for sure!;)

I might try that meself once I get the donor car dismantled. I know! I'll invite myself up to Brians place and try sliding it onto the SM465 I sold him. Yeah, that's the ticket! ;)

Yes - the input shaft is 1 1/8" X 10 Spline. The BH is 6 5/8" deep. Pic of other side later today.

Well Mcruff was right about the clutch splines. :( Seems as though the splines on the Chevy 1 1/8"x10 pattern are just a wee bit "fatter" than the Mercedes 1 1/8"x10 pattern. It "kinda" splines onto the 15/16" x 10 pattern, but it's way too sloppy to ever use like that. I'm a little disappointed, but not too terribly suprised.

Methinks I've decided on the following configuration: Benzo pressure plate, Jeep clutch disc, throwout bearing, and fork, and adapter that mimics the bottom of the original bellhousing complete with the hole for the original mechanical cluth linkage and stick with mechanical clutch actuation. Whaddya think guys, sound doable?
