My Jeep has the emergency brake on the rear of the trans/transfer case.
All other hardware for it has been removed. What do I need so I can have an emergency brake?

I have the same problem. The drum/shoes/etc. are mounted on the transfer case, but there's no evidence that the rest of the stuff was ever there. No handle, brackets, cables, etc., and no wear marks on the lever at the transfer case to indicate it ever had a cable attached.

The e-brake was probably an option that wasn't installed on my JEEP, but I assume the drum and components were put on the transfer cases by default, and the handle/brackets/cable could be quickly installed by the dealer. At least that's what I think. I don't know exactly what parts are involved, but I need everything from the handle to the actuating cable.

This is something I'm going to have to address when I get to that point, so I'm interested in the availabilty of these parts too. FWIW, I think that Beachwood Canvas has all the parts, but I haven't confirmed that. They're mentioned in the catalog anyway. Walck's would probably be my first contact, and there's another guy DBA The Jeepsterman that seems to have a lot of NOS parts. Might ask 'em.

...or you could just ask for a pic or 2, and perhaps place a WTB ad once you find out what pieces you're lacking. ;)

I'm going to use a Lokar Universal fit floor mount handle and cable on Linus next spring. Just a thought

Since you've made the 11" brake upgrade, another option is a rear drums e-brake. The floor handle and cables from a postal DJ should work without too much trouble. The parts for the original set up should be easy to get from the usual sources like Walck's, if you want to keep it stock. It's a cable/handle assembly that bolts under the dash and a small clamp to hold the end of the cable sheath to the chassis. The cable wire attaches to the drum lever. I think that's about it.

I guess my first try will be to call Walck's and see if he has a used handle etc to hook up the transfer case drum brake. If not then I'll go to plan B which I'm not sure what that is at this time.

Seems like the last time I looked at an T-case E-brake thread, it was pointed out that an 11" rear drum conversion was not much better than the T-case setup. Theory was you can't put enough strain on the handle to lock it up. I passed on this option when I bought my big brakes 30 years ago, but I don't remember why. It was only $20, so it wasn't money.

T-case brake can be made to work; mine has, at times in the past. (As a parking brake only; you couldn't possibly stop the thing with one 8 inch brake.) Trick is to keep it working with all the grease and crud helping out. I'll fix mine again someday.

Also, I believe the missing link of parts commonly available is the spring loaded adjustment rod inside the drum. If you have one, don't break it!! Right now, I think that's where I need to do a little adjustment. Carefully!

When I had my old M38A1 it had an emergency brake handle that mounted to the tool box and went down thru the floor and hooked directly to the E brake. I really liked that as it had a much more direct connection that allowed me to get more force to the E brake than the stock CJ set up using the chessy little handle under the dash and a cable. Wish I had the forsight to remove and keep that before parting with the M38A1.:( Mike

IIRC the umbrella handle on a CJ pulls directly on the brake cable. My F100 had an umbrella handle that went to the rear 11" Bendix brakes, and the only way you could set the brakes hard enough to hold was to stomp hard on the brake pedal at the same time that you pull briskly on the umbrella handle. The floor pedal in the intermediate CJs, as in my current truck work much better because they act as a lever to pull on the end of the cable. The foot pedal also has the advantage that you can push harder with your foot than you can pull with your hand. Some umbrella handles work by pulling another lever that multiplies the force on the pedal, but on a CJ I don't think you have enough room under the dash for such a lever. The floor mounted handles, ala VW, Pinto, and most other small cars, are also a lever that multiplies the force on the cable.

Lots of options, but the umbrella handle is likely the worst of the lot.

Umbrella handle I like that name, I have called it a lot of things before, nothing I could put down here but never that. It really got called some nasty names when I had the full cage in the JEEP. Well at least now it doesn't hurt me but when I find the old CJ somewhere other than where I left it I still call it ugly names.:) Mike

I have the drum brake on TC and the handle but I need the cable inner and outer. It has a ball on one end and the u shaped bracket on the other end. I also need the clip to hold the outer cable to the handle. Anybody know a source? I don't think the handle is stock as the bracket has a plate welded to it to bolt up under the dash. I do have the old cables to match up with a replacement but the inner is in two pieces.

I've got a drum, and a backing plate, but nothing else. I was planning on getting a new ***'y from Herm. Does anyone know if he or anyone else can supply the operating lever or the rod(?) that goes through the floor? I do have the lever and ratchet mechanism inside the tub, not unlike what Ppilotmike described above.
