I've been looking at posts about the saginaw conversion for my 70 cj. It seems that the postal jeep column is a good candidate to retain a stock look. I have located a 69 dj with right hand steering for $100. Is it a good deal? what other parts could be useful that would be common to my cj? Thanks in advance. Dave

The steering column from a DJ lays out great, and retains the look. I paid about $165.00 plus shipping, that was everything from the horn button and including rag joint. As far as other parts I'm not sure. I'm would think there would be some parts, but the DJ is a horse of a different color.

Is it really a '69? I had thought that the useful steering column and the 11" brakes come from the mid-70s and 80s models. There was a DJ-5 (the "dispatcher" model, basically a 2WD CJ-5) and a DJ-5A, with the postal body and sliding doors.

If it's a '69 DJ-5A, I'd guess the steering and brakes are the same as your CJ-5 (Ross, 9" or 10" brakes) and wouldn't be particularly useful parts. If the engine is the Chevy 153cid 4-cylinder, that's worthwhile having.

Tim the dana 44 came out on the postal jeep in 1969 and from what I know they had the 11" brakes on them from then on, the saginaw I know was on them in 72 for sure, I was told that they had them on them from 69 on. You have to rem3mber the postal Jeep was actually intended for road use where the universal was intended for farm or offroad use.

I think the front fenders are the same though the grill and probably the hood are different. Not sure but I think.

It's definately a 69. it has the sliding doors, the little 4 cyl and an auto. When I saw it I didn't notice the steering stuff but intend to go look again. 11inch brakes and steering stuff would make it worth my while considering the prices for a postal column. If it does have the saginaw steering would it be appropriate to just use the complete steering system off the DJ. May seem like a stupid question...... Would anyone be interested in the 44 rearend or drivetrain? Thanks, Dave
