I am rebuilding a '69 CJ5 with the 225 cid V6. I have it down to the frame now and have noticed that there is a spring loaded butterfly valve inserted between the right bank exhaust manifold and exhaust pipe. There is also a small ( about 1/4 inch) tube that protrudes from the right manifold where it bends to meet the pipe.

Does anyone know what this is or was?

The butterfly valve is to divert exaust through the intake thus warming it for better cold performance. It opens once the engine warms up. The tube is for an automatic choke tube, when the warm air flows across the choke spring it allows it to open the choke butterfly. Mike

Perhaps if you snap a picture or 2 we can determine if what you have is immediately remedy-able? (Is that even a word? :?)
