Is there a way to clean the inside of the crankcase before i put the new gaskets on the motor. I have the oil pan off and would like to Know what would be good to spray in there. Hopefully it would clean the gunk off the crank and cam and internal block walls. I'm going to replace most seals but don't want to take lower half of motor apart.

Brake cleaner works very well for cleaning stuff out and then use a air nozzle with a air compressor to clean everything out

Put a bucket under the motor and pour Kerosene thru it, thats how I've always done it, good paint brush and about 3 gallons of kerosene.;)

I've put kerosene in my garden sprayer and just sprayed it. A stiff brush will help the chunks come loose!!

I thought about doing that, does the sprayer still work for other garden stuff or is it a engine cleaner now

Why, the brake cleaner is more flammable than the kerosene.

Yes the sprayer still works. Kerosene is water soluable and just flushes right out. Kerosene is pretty much hard to light, it has a flash point of about 140 degrees. You can put a match out in kero.

Is the engine still in the Jeep? If so, I would clean what crud I could with rags, etc. but would be careful about getting solvents in the bearings, etc.. Be sure to reprime the oil pump by packing it with vaseline and crank the engine over with out starting till oil pressure builds up or turn the oil pump with a large screwdriver bit in a drill. When you get it running might try running some high detergent oil in the engine to clean it up. A diesel mechanic recommends Chevron Delo 400 and change the oil filter at short intervals for a while.

Saaay, that garden sprayer is a good idear! I'd buy one just for that purpose. I have a sprayer with a 1qt. can that goes on the end of an air hose, but it makes a mell of a hess. Used to use it with solvent, works great. Probably considered definitely non-eco-friendly nowadays. Too many neighbors too close anyhow.
