My jeep needs a diaper for driving and a litter box at rest. Latest is I think the rear main, it's coming out the drain hole at the bottom of the bell housing. The manual shows this as a 2 piece seal. Does this mean it can be changed without pulling the crank?

Could be the rear main of course, but the tranny leaking at the front can also come out of the bellhousing hole. And yes you can change the seal without removing the crank. Just need to loosen it. Perfect time to do that while working on the transmission. :hurrican:

thanks Glenn. I'm accumulating a list of things to do. Drove it this weekend while working on a friends M38. Makes a great parts-run vehicle.

Check to see what is dripping out of the hole. I did have a leak from the rear main seal, so I dropped the pan, loosened the crank, cleaned thoroughly and used a good (not excessive) amount of black RTV. I usee the RTV in the holes where the rubber plugs go. Seems that the rubber plugs are as much a culprit as the seal itself. Anyway, I forced the RTV into the holes, letting some "hang" down for compression onc the pan is back on, problem solved. Trick is getting everything CLEAN. Also, there is the cheepo seal that is skinny vs. a wider seal that I used the second time. I'll find the part # if you need it......

So what do the rubber plugs do? They're on the mounting flange for the oil pan? That part number would be good. thanks.

They "seal" between the end cap and the block. The idea is that they compress when you bolt up the oil pan. With RTV, you can force it in there, build some up and still have it compress, but the RTV form fits the holes and seams thus forming a better seal. Lots and lots of threads at Willystech on this subject.

I'll get that part felpro # tonite for you.
