Did you just lose a ujoint or did you twist the driveshaft? I agree with jrry, do a wanted post and somebody will probably have one. But if you were just going down the road, it just sounds like a ujoint going, and that is an easy fix, no need for a new drivshaft.

Nothing wrong with using the front drive shaft as a front wheel drive. During my 13 years in So Cal, Many a time I came home from a desert trip on the front drive shaft because the rear was in pieces, that is until I had a custom one made of thick wall tubing.

Front wheel drive is kinda neat in a Jeep....... if only for a short time:rofl:

If it is a Ujoint, it does happen. Most likely the ujoint was original and it just gave up the ghost. Get a picture of what you have left and we can tell you if you need a shaft or ujoint. Chacnes are the destroyed ujonit wasnt lubed in a very long time and it turned to dust. I just changed a set of ujoints in my axle and they were dust dry inside the caps.

The splines? look ok but one of the yoke holes:? that connect to the rear axle is bent in a little....The whole thing left the jeep..I had to trek to go find it....

lol. i was transfering from san diego to maine in 2002. has an 84 gmc 4x4 pulling my jeep behind. 8800 lbs total weight on and behind the truck. i lost my rear u-joint SEVERAL miles from anywhere. so i pulled the drive shaft, threw it in 4x4 and towed my jeep in a front wheel drive gmc pickup. it drove so damn funny..lol, but hey..i made it.
IIRC, it was 25-30 miles that i had to tow my jeep in front wheel drive so running on front wont hurt it at all as long as it isnt TOO far.

Here's a front-wheel drive-only Jeep towing a float in my HS homecoming parade. The Jeep was my dad's yet, on the way to the parade I was showing off how it could burn rubber in first gear and threw out the DS...dad pulled it off, threw it in 4-wheel drive and sent me on my way...;)

Many a crippled 4x4 has limped home on just the front driveshaft alone. Granted, I wouldn't drive from here to Los Angeles that way, but if I had to choose between walking...

Before you do that, can you get a picture for us of what is left, this may save you alot of money. You may just get another yoke even.

I had my rear DS fall out this summer.I took it off and locked the front hubs like others have mentioned and drove it home. It looked to have been bent in the past and from being out of balance caused the failure. I got a good used one locally for $20.00. $200.00 for a new one seems steep to me. I would search E-Bay or this site for a used one if you need one.
