I have a '77 CJ5 with the 304 and absolutely hate my power steering. It has absolutely no road feel and is way too "light". I plan on doing a frame-off in a few years and modifying PS from an '88 Dodge Dakota to work (I have one of those and like the way the steering feels). I'll have to have an adapter machined between the Dakota splines and the Borgeson shaft I just put on but it'll be worth the expense.

You will need the pump, brackets for pump, hoses and steering box. The steering box will bolt directly in place of the manual one currently there.

TJ box will work as will almost any other Saginaw box. Brackets will have to be off the same year model engine as the one you have. any saginaw pump will work as well. Its better to get the newer o-ring style pump and box as opposed to the preassure fittings of the older units.

David, where are you in York? :D
    I'm in New Salem...

As for to light/no road feel, I had that, until I swapped my PS box for a remanufactured unit a few months ago. Advance Auto sells a unit remanned by LARES Corp. I got one for a '75 CJ5. It's a 20:1 box, 4 bolt, flared fittings. Cost $169 plus $50 core.
It totally changed the way my CJ drives, nice and tight now(also running a Borgeson shaft)
Well worth the $$$ to be rid of the "too loose/too quick" power steering.
    :)

Lynn - a hop, skip and jump from you - down in Glen Rock. I'd like to check out your steering if possible. Can you call me @ 235-7143 when you get a chance? Dave.

Lynn - took it to Stouch's last night for an alignment and inspection. Damn near wiped out when I hit a puddle (you know how it was raining last night). After dropping it off at Stouchs, I went to Advance Auto in Shrewsbury and ordered a rebuilt power steering box. It'll be in today. I hope that makes a difference like yours did - I already replaced all of the tie rods and ends, and steering shaft. Not much else to replace under there. I plan on taking this thing to Reading tomorrow and DC next Monday - I'll let you know what kind of difference this box makes.
(Cardone Power Steering gear box, Remanufactured - have no idea if it's pressure fit or O-ring, tho - I forgot to check that). $205 after core swap.

If you ordered it for a '77 it should match up. I think o-rings started about 1980.
Hope you see as much improvement as I did.

Hope you have safe trips... I'll check with you next week.
