I've decided to try the petronix ignition and I was wondering if is it necessary to replace the stock coil with a upgraded coil like the flame thrower from pertronix?

I'd rather not, but, am I being too cheap by not doing so and I'm I looking at creating problems by not upgrading?

Knock on wood, I have no problems now with my '6', she starts very easily, runs good, and seems to have plenty of power. Curiosity has gotten the best of me though, and I want to see if there really can be an increase of power and the reported better mileage seems interesting too.

I know this has been talked about a lot and I've done the searches, but couldn't find the answers I'm looking for. Thanks for any input.

I installed a Pertronix ignition in my '61 and didn't replace the stock coil and have had no issues. It was money well spent.

You can use the stock coil fine.
If you do upgrade to the Pertronix coil get the Epoxy filled one.
Its made for off road. ;)

I added only the Pertronix sensor. I didn't notice a change in gas mileage but starting sure is a dream. I just touch the starter, for maybe a 1/4 rev, and it fires up every time.

I've been running a Pertronix for 10 yrs. No problems (except for the time I mistakenly wired a hot wire direct to ground and fried most of my ignition  )
The Pertronix smoothed my idle and eliminated hesitation upon acceleration :)
I run a Jacobs coil, have been running the same coil for over 10 yrs...

    From Jacobs website:

    ENERGY COIL
The Energy Coil has the highest output of any non-variable coil available. The
Energy Coil is constructed of chrome plated steel and is oil filled for better
internal heat dissipation. The coil is completely sealed and can operate in any
position. It is extremely rugged, and can sustain up to 23 G shocks. The
Energy Coil has escape voltages up to 50,000 volts.

Thanks for the info. I think I'll order the new coil. Might as well as long as I got permission to do so :) I'll be interested to see any differences that do come about.

Dang, I found an article the other nite on high voltage coils and it described in detail how ignition systems worked and what a higher voltage coil did for you.

    Now I can't find it.

    5 minutes later...

Here it is! This is a great article on ignition systems in general.

I changed to Pertronix in my dune buggy and kept the stock coil with no problems. If you're going to buy a new one, keep the old coil in your trail kit as a spare. They do out form time to time. I've had my coil go bad two different times while offroading. The first time I didn't have a spare & had to walk out. From then on, always a spare in my kit.

I had a buying question also. Do you order for a certain distributer part number or just for, say, a 4 cylinder L head?

A friend put the pertronix in my 225 odd fire for me and he is very maticules, never makes mistakes. the motor had been sitting for 10 years and we built a whole new buggy around it. When we fired it it had very poor (like 3 cyl poor) power. I couldn't fin d the instructions but took the magnetic pick up ring and turned it 180* and it runs much better. I later got the directions out of another non V6 pertronics kit and there was no mention of how the ring goes in. Is this exclusive to the 225 Odd fire?

I still need more Power for what im doing.

Seems there was quite a few Pertronix units for the 225 that had the magnet ring marked 180* off....
