I started replacing the front knuckle oil seals. The replacement seals have 2 piece design w/ a felt seal. The one I took off is one piece metal ring w/ an attached wiper and no felt seal. This looks like it could be original(?), is this a M38a1 application or something the previous owner applied? :hurrican:

Most of the kits I've seen have a one-piece rubber seal with a steel lip embedded into it. In order to get this over the axle (even if you have the knuckle off the axle tube) you will have to cut the seal at the split in the steel to get it over the axle housing. This is OK, as long as you position the seal do that the cut you made is at teh 12 O-Clock position on the knuckle when it is assembled. The felt "seals" you describe are actually only wipers to keep the bulk of the mud and crud off the actual seal underneath. Teh splits on the steel retainer ring and the felt wipers should be at the 3- and 9-O'Clock positions. HTH ;)

Yeah my kit is like that, and I've cut the rubber seal and I am ready to put it back on. The one piece ring that was taken off is the steel retainer ring and the rubber seal/wiper is attached to it (all one piece). No felt seal could be placed between them. The metal ring had a split at the 12 o'clock position and had to be twisted/bent to get off.

The new kits are a bit different than the originals, but they work. Mine were as you described originally, but the replacements worked out just fine. Good luck to you! ;)

Was there a year they changed from one piece to 2 piece? The factory manual I've got describes the seals as 2 piece with felt. My original seems more waterproof(?), no felt to suck up water. :hurrican:
