Got a good laugh out of that picture of your 2 boats :D Took a minute to download so all I first saw was the bigger boat :D
Started wondering what you were smoking till the whaler showed up...

I see your confusion, the big boat package weighs 4600 lbs. A bit much for most vehicles. Does this mean you don't want to know what I'm smokin? I towed the whaler with my wifes VW westfalia arround the neighbor hood just to see how it would do. It has a tow rating of 1000 lbs but did fine, it also has some weight to it so it didn't get pushed arround. But backing a rear engine toward saltwater is a little scary.

I work at a marina and we flat tow with a 1952 Harry Ferguson tractor, the largest Whaler we tow is a 27 foot Outrage center console with twin 225 Merc Optimax's. The tractor only has rear brakes and highway speed is about 15-17 mph, we flat tow short distances 1/4-1/2 mile on country roads for deliveries. It does fine but we have to be careful because the brakes are fair at best so we take note and use speed carefully, I guess if you know basic limitations the Jeep will tow fine with a 13 foot Whaler.

I have an accessories catalog listing the Spen trailer as the Willys approved trailer for the jeep. The Spens are rated 3/4 ton so you should be fine w/ a CJ5 because the ad was 2A/3A dated.

The 27 Outrage was a huge boat, wide beam. Low-end torque needed to move that with something so old. My partner and I used to work for Whaler Engineering, pre-searay infiltration, and designed that model and most of the others from that era. We've sinced left and started our own design firm. I'll be doing some experimenting before trying anything drastic. We don't need it as a tow vehicle.

Reading your description of the towing you plan you'll be fine using the CJ5.
