I ordered a left and right mirror for my 59 CJ5 and got two square ones. They claim to be from the right years so I'm left asking you'all, should they be round or square.

And once we've answered that should I stick with the square one because they're vastly superior?

And actually IIRC there's only one mirror, on the drivers side. And definitely round, not square. Where did you order from? A lot of these places have no idea what is correct and what isn't.

As far as what to use, it's up to you...

'59 should be one small round DS mirror as Brian indicates.

The PO put the later square mirrors on my CJ6 - and although I probably never would have done so, now that I've had them I'm sticking with them. I use that PS mirror a whole lot more than I expected to.

Just FYI...the aftermarket tends to label parts like this in a "what will work" fashion, sometimes even a "what will work with a bit of work on the Jeep owners part" fashion, sometimes even a "we'll say this will work even though there is no way that it will" fashion, but almost never a "this is the correct part for your year Jeep" fashion.

    Summed up well, Mike.

Your mirror was round originally. You can get another round one, but they are not very useful. If you plan on using the mirrors, go with the square ones. JMHO...

edit: I should say that I have a round one on the DS and a windshield mount mirror. I use them both. I do not have a ps mirror on the JEEP.

I believe the square model first appeared on the intermediates. Anything prior to late 1970 had 1 (one) round 5" outside diameter mirror on the drivers side "only".

Actually the early '5 FSM reprint ('64?) shows both the the round & square mirrors, they must have shown up in the early-mid 60's, I'm guessing about he same time the V6 showed up.

FWIW, I put the intermadiate style square mirrors on my '67.. I didn't like the look, but I installed them out of neccesity, as my Jeep is my daily driver...I have since got used to the look, maybe even don't even notice the mirrors.... I do use them, like Boyink said....

The PO put the square ones on mine. Thought about switching back
but I got used to the square ones. And I believe they are better than
    the round ones. IMHO.

OK, thanks for the info. Most of my web searching came up with one round one and that's what I remember, I wasn't sure if a square one would have also been an option, but it seems not.

I've seen discussions on the web that says the lone round one on the DS was there in name only and was pretty useless for actually seeing things. I want the original look, but this will be a DD and will never be entered in a restoration contest.

I think I'll go with two square ones based on your opinions of the usefulness of lone round ones. Traffic here in Mesa, AZ dictates I err on the side of safety, no sense in having a wrecked perfect restoration instead of a close one that lets me see the guy acting stupid.

Can anybody tell me, or point me to a photo, of where that round DS mirror was mounted on a stock '56? A photo of the mount would be great. I think a PO put mine in a different place. Here's the only photo I have of mine..

OK, got it figured out, thanks to some help! Now, is this mirror mounted in the right place?
