Yeah, easy is a relative term. Depending on your tools, capabilities, time, patience, etc. It depends on you.

Using the original T-90 transmission? Several modern I4s (Pinto 2.0/2.3L, Chevy 153, GM/Pontiac 151, AMC 150, GM Industrial/Mercruiser 181), Buick/Jeep V6, Chevy V6. The small block Chevy (SBC) was popular 20 years ago, but the Buick V6 fits better and is nearly as available.

All the GM bellhousings use the same adapter, which you can buy new or used.

The most popular swap today is the Buick V6.

    Lotsa info here:
    http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/cj5_55-71_swap.htm

Go to the knowledge base there and read the other articles. IMO they are too keen on the SBC, and when they say the Buick V6 is the second most popular swap, they are referring to all Jeep swaps, not just CJs and M38s. The Buick V6 is by far the most popular for these Jeeps today, and for good reason - cheap, powerful, compact, widely available, plenty of parts and accessories support. The 4.3L Chevy V6 is popular too, but the rear-mounted distributor can interfere with the firewall (the Buick distributor is at the front).

Nothing is easy the first time... Guess that's why I have put so many V6's in jeeps - practice makes perfect :) I am biased towards the Buick V6's as I have done so many and I think they are easy. There is also a wealth of knowlege out there on this particular swap.

I have put small V8's in, but the cost is usually higher and you really don't get all that much more power to weight - unless you change out the whole drive train and go with a larger V8 - again the cost goes up.

It really boils down to what you want, and how much you want to spend to get it.
