My '59 cj5 with a 3 speed, 2 lever transfer case and pto shifts fine between Rev and 1st but not 2nd and 3rd. I have the floor cover off and can see the end of one shift rail move but not the other. It does engage but I don't know if it will stay when I drive it. Is this something common and an easy adjust, or major surgery? Lookes easy enough to get to through the top housing. thanks.

    :?
if you think you have a problem with the shift rails/forks, simply remove the top cover bolts and remove the cover. (clean dirt/debris off of and around the cover before removing)
Inspect the forks and the rails, loose, bent, etc.
How do you know it doesn't work if you haven't driven it ?
sometimes the gears won't mesh/align properly if just sitting still with engine off; gently rocking in gear will cure that.

As I said it does partially engage, enough to move the jeep forward and back a few inches. All I can do until the new fuel pump comes in. Just wondering if it's as easy as you describe or if the problem is further into the transmission.
