Bear with me on this, I'm a newbe. The jeep runs and is waiting for ordered fuel pump and tank before I can drive it. The previous owner told me it drove but only had front wheel drive. The rear drive shaft turns when pushing the vehicle so that's connected, which tells me it's the transfer case. Any thoughts on the cause and how to get to it? Will I have to pull it for repair or is it something I can do with it installed? Included in the cj3b parts that came with th jeep are a spare transmission and transfer case. Maybe it would be easier to do a swap? By the way it also has a pto winch. Thanks in advance.

Let's start off with welcome from Ohio.

Let us know what year the Jeep is and tell us more about it. What engine is in it etc.

I am sure you will find this site very helpful.

It could be simply a shift linkage problem.
    Does it have twin sticks?
    Pattern should work like this:

Have someone shift it while you watch from underneath. Sometimes the shift rails are rusted/caked up with grease and junk and won't move properly. Maybe a good cleaning/degreasing/polishing will allow things to move properly. I'd certainly look at this explanation before tearing anything apart...

Thanks Lynn, I was hoping for an explanation like this. It does have twin sticks that move but not well. Everything undernieth is rusty and layed with dry mud. (it came from West Virginia) But why would the front work and not the back?

sounds like the shift rods are rusted. would try some oil on the rod 1st and dropping the pan 2nd.

The rear should work. With my little tearinto with mine I noticed there really is no way to keep the back from rotating.

I was thinking the same thing. Unless something is broke the rear will turn?

It's easy to pull the pan off the bottom and have a look.

I think the previous owner was confused by too many levers. I just let it run to warm up and worked the levers arround. Without moving the jeep more than a few inches each direction, everything seems to work fine. It doesn't drop in to 2nd or 3rd as well and rev. and 1st. Is this an easy adjustment?
