Major oil pressure fluctuations

Well, I am back and have finished one move out of two. I am currently at Fort Rucker, AL.

Well, I started driving my Jeep again and noticed my oil pressure fluctuating anywhere from 0 to 60 PSI (F134). The first three hundred miles of driving it would stay steady at 60 PSI around 2000RPM and at idle would be at 20-25 PSI once hot.

Right before I left NY I went wheelin with a few friends and knocked her around a bit. Also, those hard dirt roads to and from were pretty rough for a 10 pack suspension.

Also, I used a tow dolly to bring her down to AL. The trip was long and bumpy enough to work both my rear body mounts loose and even loosing a bushing. Fortunately packed a spare bushing.

    Question is:

According to the service manual, " Fluctuating oil pressure can be usually traced to an air leak between the oil float support and the crankcase."

Anyone ever experience anything like this and was it the oil float support? Is there anything else I should do while the oil pan is off? Is there a torque associated with the oil float support nuts or just good'n'tight?

I am hoping I just knocked her loose.

For those curious a couple of pics are at the following link. I know, I know who likes pics....right? Of course I am the only early Jeep there.

Well, I am having problems finding the pick-up/screen. I called NAPA and he will have to call somewhere in Birmingham tomorrow. However, he did give me his Dad's name and number as he has a bunch of old Willy's parts. I am gonna have to check him out this weekend and see what he has.

So if someone knows of a supplier let me know, too.

    Thanks

Are you saying you found the problem?

No, I didn't find the problem. I am just trying to find the part according to the service manual. Like I said it says there may be an air leak between the oil float support and the crankcase. Meaning either the gasket is bad or the bolts loosened up. I was going to replace the whole assembly while I was at it.

I was just trying to find the part locally and hit a semi-brick wall. I was wondering if someone else may have had a similar problem and what their fix was.

Just a thought Kevin.... have you tried a different oil pressure gauge? My beat-up original gauge held rock-steady at 20# warm idle, but the cheesy repro unit I have now bounces around like crazy! I'm thinking that the dampening in the off-shore replacement gauge is either ineffective, or non-existant.

I know I have a V6 but my Autometer mechanical gauge shows mine around 15-20 psi at hot idle and 35-40 around 2000 rpm.

i had a similar problem after rebuilding an l-head. if that gasket isn't sealed tightly then it has no suction to pull the oil up. i had to drop the pan and take care ofthat gasket. everything was good from then on. but, a gasket that seals some times and not thers sounds a little bit weird to me.

also, i know it's stupid, but have you checked your oil? i had a minor oil leak in one cj that i didn't really bother with and one day it all of a sudden started dropping to 0 psi when taking off and climbing, but regained 45 while cruising. maybe you dropped a little bit of oil in the tow and it sloshes aay from the sump?

Yep, oil is good. Am going to try a different gage and go from there. Then it's on a lift and I am going to make sure the conection is tight on the oil float support. Then I will go from there.
