I have a 69 225 with a RUG top loader 4 speed, D-18 T/K OD and posi (of some sort) in the rear. 4:88's.
I have rebuilt everything mechanical from the front bumper to the back of the T/K.
My problem is It about rips your head off when trying to start from a stop. I can make it smooth but it is a very tedious process of SLOWLY feathering the clutch.
By the way I have the AA chain linkage.
Anyone got any thoughts? PS I'm not thrilled with the Hurst shifter, it is so stiff and the adjustment is very touchy on the rod linkage to the trans. I had it working well then found a mount (shifter) bolt loose. Tightened it up and now need to go back and readjust the rods.

Greg, there's something about the AA linkage...
I run a T18 with the granny low, and experience similar situations.

On the street, starting in 2nd, I can feather it pretty smoothly to start. BUT, if I try to start in 1st gear, there's no way I can feather it... no matter how smooth I try to be, it's nothing... and then LAUNCH!!

Offroad I usually do the trails in low range, 2nd /3rd gear. The more dirt/muddy water that gets in to the clutch area (unavoidable, deep mud holes :D ) the worse that gets. To avoid that launch offroad, I usually start in gear without the clutch.

I'm running the stock clutch linkage with a clutch from Krage and 4.88s. Don't seem to have that problem. Maybe the AA is the culprit??

    Hi Barry,
Yes, I have no doubt the AA is the culprit. The question is OK what now.
Anybody out there tried the AA 716639.

I converted mine to a similiar setup as the AA chain linkage, I have a shudder from a stand still start, I figured it was the clutch or flywheel rough after a episode in a creek when the bellhousing drain hole was plugged up( I drained it after a week). I think the shudder is worth the trouble when the frame is all twisted up off road and I can't get the pedal to return from the floor. Learning to adapt.

Mine also is very abrupt at takeoff. I sometimes will have my rider on a trail ride drive for awhile - just have to remember to tell them to be careful or the first takeoff will just about break your neck.

I think it has to do with the clutch linkage (stock or chain) some but also the clutch fork pivot geometry. Some useful info on this subject on the Novak sight. I plan to attempt changing the stock linkage so that it takes more pedal throw to move the fork. This would be changing the length of a tab on the pivot shaft that goes from t-case to frame.

    Has anyone done this?

I have a '71 CJ5 and it does the same thing. I've only had it for about a week now, but I have noticed that the clutch cable has been replaced with a bellcrank style mechanical linkage. I've had two different '73 CJ5's in the past and the clutch on them was much more progressive, not "on or off" like my '71. I also believe the linkage or pivot points can be modified to give a more progressive feel to the clutch. That is on the top of my project list.

Yes, I'm a newbie here and this is my first post. Hello to all!
