I scored a set of the original Jeep Renegade style alloy wheels off ebay.

My question is what type of lugnut do these use?

For some reason I figured they would use shank type lug nuts, but I don't think they do. Looks like they use regular acorn style angle seat lug nuts. I thiought alloys had to have a steel insert for this, but while shopping for wheels several places told me this was not the case. One place told me Mickey Thompsons did, but the cheaper versions by other companys (american racing??) did not.

    Appreciate any input.

Now I gotta decide if I polish or paint these. I hate to polish and like the look of the painted alloy wheels that come on a lot of new cars.

I always thought they used the shank type too. Check the diameter of the hole in the wheel vs. the dia of the stud. As for painting them, I'd say no. Can't see painting a nice alloy wheel. Lot's of good spray on cleaners on the market today. Eagle One makes some good stuff and it's easy. Might have to scrub a little the first time if they're real dirty. My .02.

The ones that I dealt with on another 5 did not have a shank type, they were acorn nut.

[sidenote]Wish I could get 'em. That Jeep is just sitting now again after I fixed it up[/sidenote]

The TJ's ARE alloys used an acorn style nut as well.

74-75 Ren shows 1/2"-20 x 13/16 hex chrome cap ( regular tapered lug nut)

Looks like standard acorn then. Thanks. The holes didn't look big enough for the shank type.

Wouldn't be right to use my old rusty open ones I guess. Spose I gotta look for some bling chrome ones.

I have a set of centerline 15x7 "modular" style wheels that were given to me in rough shape. I bead blasted them and painted them with silver "wheel color" from the Jeep Paint chip book using the omni brand car paint. Turned out really nice. They are a medium sliver, I would go for something lighter for these if I paint them. I really like to just wash and wax a wheel just like the rest of the Jeep, rather than having to polish them. But it does seem wrong to paint this set of "vintage" wheels. Was thinking maybe polish them and then clearcoat them. Anyone done that?

Duplicolor has some pretty decent clear in spray cans. Believe they are polyurethane.

Probably more than you want to spend, but POR has a wheel kit that takes it from bad all the way to clearcoat.http://www.prp-porstore.com/page/por15/PROD/Kits/WPK
I remember a kit Stacy on Trucks was touting a while back by Mothers-maybe? Someone else know what it is?:v6:

I've got alloy wheels on my 70. I used Mother's Mag Wheel Polish to clean them up and applied 3 coat of Carnuba wax. They've stayed nice looking for about 2 years now. I wouldn't paint them but I guess paint could always be removed. If you run across another set, let me know. I'm looking for some for the 71 I recently purchased.
