OK, I just recently put in a new clutch, and replaced all of the gaskets, seals, ball bearings, roller bearings, snap rings, and basically the whole small parts kit deal in my transmission and transfer case (t14/d18).

I mentioned on a thread a few weeks back that it was making this horrible metal on metal sound. Well I replaced everything and still the noise. Any ideas? Does it at idle with tcase in neutral, or going down the road or whenever in gear (clutching it stops the noise) but even with the tranny in neutral and the clutch out it makes the noise, just much quieter.

Thanks to anyone who can help me.. it's my DD and I have classes

sounds to me like the drive train is rubbing the body somewhere.

    sooo......
    you had a noise
    o'hauled both units
    still had the noise
    o'hauled again
    still the noise, correct?
from your discription above, i think we can eliminate the t/case.
I suspect front trans bearing and/or pilot rollers from what you describe.
clutch not adjusted properly can cause t/o bearing to turn all the time
sound slike either a clutch problem or trans problem to me.

When I first bought my 71 it had the same noise you describe and same symptoms,it turned out that the PO had installed the clutch backwards so it was rubbing on the flywheel bolts.
Just a thought or something to look for.

My first thought was throw-out bearing (release bearing). Could be the clutch disc, mabe installed backwards or broken spring, or the tranny front bearing. Did you replace the front bearing in the tranny? Did you use a new gasket? Perhaps the oil hole was/is covered by the gasket, causing bearing failure...
