I was reading online about D25's, since i have a spare one from my GPW i am parting. i was going to keep it for parts. but the DS and Yoke is different. the D25 on the jeep uses a tiny Ujoint. and the GPW one uses what i would consider a normal size one. why is that different? is one better than the other?

tried to research this question for you.
the front axle yokes are interchangable: small to large, large to small.
    D25 to D27, D27 to D25.
    This happens frequently.
As mentioned above, the smaller diam yokes/ujoints were used primarily on D27 V6 CJs for increased clearance between starter and oil pan.
however, the parts book does show the smaller joints/yokes being used on 3B and early 5s with F4s; can't say I have ever seen one though.
As far as strength, don't think it really matters; smaller would seem stronger in my mind, just less overall length/mass.
I think the u-joint cap diameters are the same between the two joints.
One might have more/less roller needles inside the cap.
FYI, the larger diameter u-joints are used from 1941 - 1986 on both front and rear shafts for CJs, except as noted above.

    thanks,

all i could find on the net was the same stuff from offroad.com

just didn't know and since i had one of each thought i would use the stronger of the two. i will stick with the small one i think. can you pickup Ujoints at the local parts store(napa, oreileys, auto zone...etc)

guess I'm going to argue with myself now.......
I would go with the larger
    WHY ?????????
so that all 4 u-joints on my Jeep are the same size
I like to carry spare parts...... too much some times
so you would only need to carry one or two since they would be all the same !!
the smaller yokes are a little hard to find, not available new anymore if I recall
    ymmv

so it is a matter of just pulling the yoke, and swapping the front DS?

I also like to carry spares, especially U joints. i had to get pulled out of the woods once cause of a blown one.
