I just bought a new light switch but its nothing like what came out of my jeep. it has a few more terminals, etc. If any of you guys could help me out as to which terminal is which I would appreciate it.

If this helps, the terminals are labled as follows: B1, R, I, H, D, P
    Also, it's a 71 v6 w/ stock wiring harness.

It wouldn't be too difficult to bench test it. Just hook up a 12v source to the B1 terminal, and some light to another terminal and see what position of the switch activates each one. :)

I'd take it back and get the correct one. Take the old one in, if you have it, to match up.

I've been in the same boat trying to find the correct stock light switch for my 71 at local parts stores. I gave up and fixed my existing one for the time being....

You might try a search because I remember a thread on light switches a while back, and the 71 was mentioned. There may be a good online source for the original style switch mentioned there.

alrighty, i've got my cherokee spare in front of me... and although it looks a little different the pins are in the same place. just going off intution b1, b2, and b3 are most likely going to be battery supplies. p looks like parking lights, h for headlights, d for dimmer, and I for the return from the dimmer circuit. ground goes out the back and i have no clue what u would be. again, just intuition, but it might be worth a shot??

by all means try and find something for an earlier cj. i don't remember what the switch looked like for my 71 (i threw all the wiring out within the first 20 minutes of owning it), but the earlier switches are a breeze to wire up and figure out what's going on.

I have the wiring for that switch, not handy now, but can get it. You might want to use that switch if you like the idea of dome/courtesy lights, and dimming gauge lights. You can do that with that switch and still have the parking lights go out when the headlights come on like original.
Not sure if 71 had any of those features or not. If they did, I would definitely try to find the right switch.
On my 67, I didn't have the courtesy/dome lights or dimming dash lights, so I added that type switch to get them. I reused my stock knob so you can't even tell by looking at it.
