I started calling around looking for a Cherokee wheel and column yesterdat and wuickly discovered my stock one was pretty good after all.
$300 for a junk yard one.
I'm going to do my Power steering with the stock shaft and then maybe someday make it pretty.

Try a Camaro one, or an 70s/80's GM X-body one (Monza, maybe cavalier)... should be easy to find and well under 100 bux for a short GM column... even a rebuilt one from Centech (www.centechwire.com) is cheaper than that!!

What Lynn said. Might add Malibu, Cutlass and Regal. Fwd drive cars from same era are shorter 26"-28" but also will work. Like Cheerokee they have dimmer switch and wiper contols in column. Was told by someone last year he had used one from an S10 also. I've bought these for less than $100.

I saw quite a few cherokee's in the pick-a-part places here last weekend. I'm (pretty) sure they wouldn't charge that much, but you'd have to do your own disassembly.

S10s, S15s/Sonomas, YJs use the same column.

The one in my 5 that Oakes put in is from a '76 CJ-7, same basic column as the one was in my '92 S10.

That's highway robbery. I would start looking on ebay or online classifieds before spending that much.

I've said it before--I good junkyard is harder to find than a gold mine, and worth more.

I've found one or two good ones being stationed different places over the years... but that is a different thread.

    Well thanks guys.
I found a good junkyard just a few miles down the road after calling all over the western states. I needed a Ford steering box to send to NAPA for a core. I spent a whole day calling around looking for one (NAPA) wanted to charge me $100 for the core. Anyway time after time I was told "we don't sell cores, just good parts" and it was said rudely.
Finally I found these guys close by. They know and like jeeps and I got the core for $50. While I was in there we got to talking about columns and he said "we got tons of them, just come back and you and I can go prowling through the yard and see what you can use.
I told them I have an old jeep and now you have a customer for life :)
