Recently I disassembled a V6 Ross steering box for a fun rebuild project. (first mistake). The long horn tube worked its way out of its swaged seat, and I'm wondering how the best way is to re-seat it as securely as possible so that fluid doesn't leak out that hole. It looks as if the flared end of the tube (much like the flared end of a brake/fuel line) un-flared and allowed the tube to come free. Anyone been here before? Tips?

I degreased mine really well with brake cleaner, and then soldered the tube back into the plug at the bottom of the box. You have to remove the plug in order to get it hot enough to flow the solder, otherwise the cast housing will suck up all the heat. Once I had the tube back in place, I used JB Weld to put the plug back in the box so it wouldn't leak. It worked great until Tellico when the bearings let go....

Great ideas there, thanks Steve. I've never soldered before...looks to become a first. :)

It's easy once you get the knack. Just keep the flame away from the solder, and use plenty of flux. You heat the work, then the work melts the solder.

Make sure all the parts are squeaky-clean and shiny, and you'll have no problem. You'll need a propane torch, since a soldering pencil or gun won't be able to heat the parts sufficiently. They don't need to be cherry-red, but just hot enough to evenly melt the solder. The solder should flow into the joint, and be nice & shiny when it's done. If it is dull-grey looking, or has lumps and balls of solder here and there, it won't hold worth beans. HTH. ;)

Crap, just realized I don't know how to saughter. Flux? All's I know is the plug-in type pen that heats up, and some bailing wire-looking meltable metal. Plus I went to look at the "plug" Steve was talking about...huh? Is that the circular disk at the bottom of the box with the hole in it? How/why does that come out? Would that also need to be welded in?

Dad'll know how to saughter so no biggie there. Just gotta get there.

I just left the tube out and welded the hole up, I think timmy has that in his ride right now.. I didn't need no stinkin' horn tube... had a seperate button elsewhere.
