Searched around but didn't find a solid answer. How tight am I supposed to make the bolts on the bellcrank? My Haynes manual says tighten them until the bellcrank moves freely then tighten the lock nut/bolt. Basically, how free is free? As it is now, I have the cotter pin on the top of the bell crank and as I turn the wheel, the huge bolt (with the locknut/cotter pin) actually turns a little bit with the bell crank. If I make it any tighter then that, it becomes harder to turn the bellcrank. Also, is there an acceptable amount of "play" in the bell crank or does it pretty much need to be rock solid? As loose as I have it now, you can grab one of the "arms" coming off of it and it will "wiggle", just alittle. Any tighter and it won't wigglr, but becomes more difficult to turn.

What is the likely hood of it not being tight enough and the huge bolt/lock nut just unscrewing?

    Thanks for any help.

on the early, small diam bellcrank, torque the shaft nut to 70-90 ft lbs.
torque the clamp bolt to 50-70 ft lbs

on the larger diam or later style, loosen the clamp bolt, and adjust the shaft locknut until the bellcrank just rotates freely without a bind.
torque the clamp bolt to 50-70 ft lbs

Note: on both diameter shafts , remember to install the bearings approx 1/8" below the bore face of the bellcrank. Also, the washers should have a chamfer on them; this chamfer goes towards the bellcrank.

what exactly is a "bind". Is that refering to any up & down movement versus the bell crank rotating? Wish I knew if I had the small diam or the larger diam. It is on a 1953 M38-A1.

    Thanks for the help.

shaft diam for small is 7/8"
    large diam is 1 1/8"
Bind is referring to the bellcrank rotating I believe.
