Well, as stated in the introduction, the 65 is in the garage and is ready for its rebuild. We have been cleaning it out and generally looking it over. We are statring with a 134 (havn't found out if it's a F or L head) The distributor is a rusted mass, the generator looks ok. Has a T-90 3 speed, Haven't Id'd the xfer case yet.

On thing I did notice was the battery cables, the red one is connected to the frame and the black one goes to the starter,. I still haven't figured out if it's 6V or 12V , but I assume that if it's pos ground, then it's probably 6V system. I know our Ford tractor is 6V Pos Ground, I guess I wasn't thinking a 60's modle would still be pos gnd.[IMG]

Nope, negative ground. The color code is reversed, likely becasue of simple cheapness.

If your engine has a valve cover, it's an F-head. It should be an F-head if it hasn't been replaced.

Someone else correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought *all* Jeeps were negative ground. If it's a '65, it's almost certainly a 12-volt system. As far as the engine type, if it's original it is almost certainly an F-head. The dead giveaway is whether you have a valve pan on the top of the head (F-head) or the spark plugs screw straight down into the top of the head (L-head). Besides, we all know that nobody would *ever* put an incorrect engine into an early Jeep. ;)

I think the easiest way to tell if it were 6- or 12-volt would be to see what generator/alternator/regulator setup you have and go from there. Also, check the light bulbs and see what number is in there now. You can cross-reference the bulbs to see what application you have.

Yep! It's a F head, it's 12, and it's neg ground. A lot of things under the hood are all crossed up. But that 's what makes rebuilding FUN!!! It's easy to rebuild one you've owned for awhile, but you get all sort of surprises when you pull one out of the woods.

We got all of the debris out of the inside, found the floor boards, well whats left of them anyway. And got the hard top off tonight. I ment to get pix to post , I will get those tomorrow.

I love that hard top. Do the stacks get too hot to be that close to the metal? Seems like it would.

Nope. They have been on there for 4 years, with 3 trips to So Cal from Pa on them. They do get warm but not enough to cause problems. :)
