    I thought I had a 12V electrical system, but now I'm confused.

    1967 Dauntless CJ5
Owners manual says it could 6V or 12V.

I hooked up the battery to the charger, and plugged it in. It pegged at 8amps until the circuit popped.

I measured the voltage in the Battery, it's about 7, and if I set the charger to 6V it works normally.

How do I identify what type system I have? The battery doesn't say anywhere on it.

    Hop'in it's 12V,,,just tell me it's 12 then tell me the truth!

Got a multimeter handy? Test the battery. Sounds like 6V to me, though...

Also, check the alt/generator. My 12V has a tag on it that says so, maybe yours does, too.

The multimeter say 8.03. There is a data tag on the alternator with nothing obvious on it. It runs will run the lights, but not the engine. It's been about eight months since I started her, and now I will pay.

have you checked the volts when the motor is running? unsure of 6v, but 12v "should" be 12.9-14v when charging.

Just talked to Grandpa (I bought it from him) and he is certain it is 12V. I'll go with that.

    Thanks.

1957 was the change-over date but 6V was optional after that to some date.
Usually red/orange tag on the gen is 6V and green 12V

To add a lack of clarity, my '57 was stock with 6 volt. The change over took place in '57, but my guess is that you'd probably need a serial number as a reference to when that changeover took place. My # is 51051, still had 6v, and still had left handed threaded shackles as well.

According to my manual #49248 was the last 6 volt as standard, so maybe yours was ordered as 6 volt. :hurrican: :)

A standard 12 volt battery has 6 individual cells (caps) and a 6 volt battery has 3 individual cells (caps).
