That Cherokee column is the same as my 79' Firebird column. It has the same shaft except it doesn't have a wiper switch on the column. I also used the original mounts. I cut and moved the dash mount apart a little. I also cut the floor plate off and rewelded it to fit over the hole in the floor.

XJ's are all floor shift, even the autos. The only lock on the one I used was a steering wheel lock and I just left it on.

It's true that XJs are all floor shift, but the automatics have an interlock mechanism that prevents you from removing the key, until the shifter is in park.

I ordered a weldable two piece shaft collar and a vibration damping U-bolt from McMaster-Carr to fab my top and bottom mounts.

sorry i didn't answer your question. i've been offline for a bit and just got the email note that you posted the question.

basically i simply removed the long rod. all that is left is the steering lock when i remove the key. i still sometimes have to push the little catch on the top left side of the column to remove the key since the spring isn't strong enough or it catches. but that's rare. i elected to not use the column key for ignition just as a "theft deterrent" (steering lock). i reinstalled the dashboard ignition just out of nostalgia.

sorry i didn't answer sooner. man.... is it it winter break yet. i have never been on so many committee's..... ;-)

i can send another pict if you wish
