Ive always read that you need twice the winch as your wieght. I was thumbing though Northern tools sale catalog and ran across a ramsey 5000 lbs short drum made in the :flag: . My jeep weighs 2600 with me in it , but by next year it will be pushing 3000 pounds. I like the short drum because it leaves plenty of room for a sagnaw box. I wish I could find a decent priced 6000 model but it looks like you have to get 5000 or 8000 no in betweens. Of course I want something Cheap ,Good and made in the :flag: ;) . What are yalls thoughts on winches?

I've always heard it was 1 1/2 times the vehicles weight.

That's what I've always been told: 1.5 x vehicle weight. Having said that, I have a warn 9500 (it came with the jeep); the more pulling power you have to overcome suction, terrain, etc., the better.

Keep in mind you could always buy a snatch block to use when you got in a real bind.

1.5 times is enough most of the time.
Ramsey has a 6000 lbs winch that I've been eyeballing.

Good, cheap and made in the USA don't seem to go well together anymore. For me it was a 8000 lb Bellview/Warn from eBay for $250.

I've got the Ramsey REP 5000. Probably the same one that you're looking at.

Only buy this winch with the understanding that you won't be too disappointed if it fails on you. It's not a bad winch but it's main selling point is low price - not high quality. I've used this thing for several years and it has always worked just fine. Recently used it to skid about 20 logs.

I like this winch for it's light weigh, low profile, and low cost. It has always had plenty of pulling power. I carry the snatch block but have only used it for going around corners - never needed it for more power.

Just looked at ebay and found these; item 7998818033, item 4574165139, item 7999777349. all used winches of varying prices. On was even an ol' bellevielle,<spelling> type winch.

Chicago winches are ok but very slow. i was told the mile marker electric ones are crap...but i have no exp. i would say save your pennies and get a Warn, Ramsey, or superwinch.
