As a way to combat the early CJ ignorance commonly seen on other Jeep related web sites, we'd like to get some "myth-buster" pages into the tech section.

These would be from the perspective of building a ECJ what I would call "normal to mild" trail and rock use, Tellico without Helicopter/Guardrail/Schoolbus, etc. Obviously if someone is building a competition rockcrawler then the answers would be different.

    Things like...

"C" channel frames are weak and need to be completely boxed.

Early CJ axles are inherently weak or too narrow and need to be replaced with full size truck or Jeep axles.

I can see using quotes from other forums as long as the username or any identifying data is removed.

The basic goal is to get people to try 'wheeling an ECJ in stock/rebuilt shape before cutting it up for larger engines / axles / drivetrain as there seems to be a general perception out there that all that "upgrading" is a requirement to hit the first trail.

So tell us...what myths have you heard?

Ross steering has to be replaced with power saganaw.

You must have OBA and engine driven is the best way of doing it

2 piece axles are worthless and must be replaced with 30 spline 1 piece.

I could go on and on. Basicly look at my JEEP and it shows how listening to other people is a bad thing.

If you can just get people to stop repeating/regurgitating the crap they read in most off road mags you'll make a good size dent.

very true , one guy in a mag I was reading this weekend said that you MUST have a crawl of 110:1 to 150:1 to rock climb with a jeep with a manual tranny.

Only "myth" I'm familiar with is the rollover one, that old JEEPS will rollover in a heartbeat. Any truth to that?

    Please keep this on topic.

All the OT banter will make it harder for me to integrate it into the tech section.

You can't have fun on the trail without the latest and best equipment.

Or without spending a lot of money.

T14 transmissions are inherently weak and need replaced.
The dana 27 and dana 25 axles are not suitable for anything but the mildest of wheelin.

-knuckle bolts have to be replaced with studs.
-6 volt jeeps have to be converted to 12v.
-vacuum wipers have to be changed to electric.

Some of the stuff I'm seeing is more what I'd call good advice rather than a myth in some cases.

The rollover thing is one though. Sure it's more likely to but only by design and if you drive it safely it's not just going to spontaneously roll over while you're driving it.
