how and where did you mount it? looks like a really decent unit.

fwiw, i have posted pics of the heater i took out of an early dj3.

haven't tried the motor yet but it should be fixable. don't know what it is but i will probably try to install this one before the iowa winter.

if it works i will might have two oe heaters with motor and core to sell.

So, I'm coming to the conclusion that back in the '50s and '60s, every Joe and his bro was peddling some kind of universal heater that could be added on to JEEP's, trucks, tractor cabs, or any other kind of wheeled hoopty that didn't have heat, and so far nobody's really sure what a '56 CJ5 heater looks like, or if they even had them?

And basically, if you have some kind of "period correct" heater that's useable, then clean that mother up and use it? So be it! That's my plan, until I find out otherwise.

    Thanks all!

Heres a few pics of the heater in my Jeep. Is this the placebo unit Boyink is talking about? If an original unit is in good shape and working, should it not really "work"? Was the original heater a bad design to begin with? Someone pls chime in. I'd like to drive it during winter and not freeze. :coffee:

I'm sure my '56 never had anything like that in it. My drivers side firewall has very few holes in it, and they're just little ones. I've seen a couple of different kinds of heaters mounted where yours is, I'd bet yours is original, but it looks to be missing the intake hose?

This one is in a '62 I know of, rotting in a little town in the mountains, and the owner won't sell.

AFAIK this is what the original heater should look like, but I'm basing that after seeing it on several 60's era Jeeps so can't completely confirm it for a '56. Jeep seemed to change as little as necessary over the years, though.

Roboter - the stock heater I had (which was like RonDogs pic) "worked", in that it put out air that was warmer than ambient temperature. It didn't warm much past your toes, though, and never did a great job defrosting the windshield.

It was a bad design IMHO - especially when you add in speeds above 10 MPG and a softtop that doesn't seal or insulate well.

And I'm up here in MI where we need a bit more heat. I've been on snow-wheeling trips where it was ~< 0 deg out, so the auxillary heater was a neccessity.

yes, what mike aka boyink said!

but roboter's seems to be an adapted unit from another veh. not only is the cover not stock but the core appears to be vertical instead of horiz. (nice valve covers btw) i suppose it would depend also on what the motor/fan unit is like and where it's located?( probably just on the other side of the firewall driver's side.)

maybe it's more efficient than the oe heater. crank it up and see if you sweat?

i mounted the heatercraft unit using the upper half of the stock hole for the original heater. i ran ducts from there and cut holes in my dash for vents. (i am not looking for a resto-jeep).

i am sure one could come up with a way to distribute the heat without using a dash mounted vent if needed.

Not at the moment. I need to take a look but I don't think it's hooked up.

I know this doesn't do you much good, but I plan on istalling the correct mil-spec Hot Water Personell Heater in my M38a1. And the reason being is not only is it more or less a drop-in installation, I also recall reading a post from a gentleman at the G503 board who was stationed in Korea in the early 60s. He said his unit had both M38a1s and M151s, and whenever they went out on manuvers the guys used to actully fight over the M38a1s becuase the heaters would drive you right out, even with torn canvas! Claimed the M151 heaters always seemed to be broken.

*Hopefully* I can replace the blower motor with a 12-volt one!

My girlfriends cj-2A came with a round heater like the pics Jd-7 posted.

It seems to me heaters and such were dealer or aftermarket add ons. The heaters such as those in the 60's era or from Jeep. My CJ-5 has the heater "delete" Anotherwords a plate that blocks off the two holes in the firewall.
