I feel like an idiot asking this, but...

How do I know what carburetor will fit my 225 :?

The P/O had the Jeep for about 10 years and never touched the carburetor. Right now...it's a little sloppy but seems to be working ok, I have a feeling that a rebuild kit or total replacement would only make an improvement to my engine's performance.

Here's the problem, I'm still progressing as a "shade tree" mechanic, and know very little about carburetors. Right now I believe I still have the factory intake manifold and the 2-barrel Rochester, at least it says "ROCHESTER 2 JET" on the top where the air cleaner sits.

So if I was to go carburetor shopping, how do I know what brand, model, and the appropriate CFM will fit my Jeep?

Or should I just take a stab at a rebuilding it?

Thanks for your patience with my noob questions

Allan: They don't make Rochester 2G's anymore (Rochester 2 Jet). They are an excellent carb and can be rebuilt many times over. If the throtle shafts are worn they can be re-bushed and shafts replaced.

The rebuild kits are available from most any aoto parts store.

There a simple carb. Just remember where the small "balls" fall out from.

If you have problems finding kits, somewhere around here I have the part #'s from the various auto parts stores.

Personally, I'd do the rebuild. Doesn't take that long, isn't too hard and is ALOT less $$ than a new carb. If you don't have one already, get a FSM; although a Chilton's will get it done. Kits are available thru NAPA/ FLAPs. Like I said, fairly easy. One recommendation is to soak the carb mount bolts with PB Blaster before beginning, better safe than sorry!! My .02 worth...

    Jim,

Thanks for the tip, I'm pretty sure that I can get a rebuild kit for my Rochester from NAPA for around $20.

A lot of people have talked about upgrading their carburetors to an aftermarket such as: Holley, Weber, or Edlebrock and getting outstanding performance. However I have no experience with carbs and was wanting to know how do I identify an aftermarket carburetor that will fit my manifold?

For example... If I went shopping for an aftermarket carburetor on ebay, how do I know which ones will work on my Jeep, will any 2 barrel carb fit on any 2 barrel intake manifold :? :?

If it dosnt they make adapters. I believe I used a holley on mine when it still had the 225 in it, and the local flaps had a holley to rochester 2bll adapter for around 20 bucks IIRC.

FWIW, IMO, YMMV I doubt you'll see much of an "excellent" improvement over the 2G unless you put a mild cam in and a Holley 390 4bbl. carb and a 4bbl. intake as well.

For me, the stock carb has always been enough. If I ever build a higher performance version of the :v6: , I'll probably look elsewhere. But until I'm changing the cam, intake, etc... it works as advertised.

Allan: For what it's worth, I bought Neptco's Holly 2300 and adaptor for future use. With a few "off-road" mods the Holly's work really well. For now, I'd stick with the 2G.

Thanks for your your input everybody, I've decided to take a crack at rebuilding the original :p .

There's a pretty good schematic with a parts list of my Rochester in the Hayes Manual. plus they have a step by step teardown procedure, so I guess I really can't screw it up too bad

    Thanks!
