Motorolla Alternator volts

    Should I get 14volts from the alternator, I am only getting 12.

    You should be getting 12.5- 13.8......If your battery is healthy..

    Thanks Patrick, You say healthy... on a meter the batt shows 12.14 volts, however it doesn't have enough power to crank the engine. If I take it to Autozone all they will do is put a meter on it and it will read within specs. Can a batt have good volts but not be able to crank?

    What if the bat has good volts but you have bad connections at the bat terminals or at the starter or ground? Check that stuff for sure if you haven't already.

    I think it's worth having the battery load tested. Around here it's free so that really makes it worth it. It is best to get it charge up first, then let it sit for awhile to lose the surface charge, then take it in to get it load tested. One exception is that if it's old - like more than 6 years - just go buy a new one.

    You probably already know about how many of us have changed to the newer style GM alternators. If not, just do a search and read up on the subject.
