Can the Donaldson Oil Bath Air Cleaner Be Modded ??

    My '66 CJ-5 has the original Donaldson oil bath air cleaner. I live in a very mountainous area, drive the Jeep up steep, rocky roads, and the oil splashes about constantly. Besides that, I would imagine that this method of air filtration is somewhat outdated. Is there a way that I can continue to use this air cleaner, but somehow upgrade it to utilize a modern cartridge filter retrofitted to fit into the Donaldson body, thus maintaining the original look ?? Has anyone tried this with any success ??

    Or putting a K&N on there removing the oil bath.

    Does that bolt right onto the air horn ?...was kinda hoping to keep the original look...

    Depends on your YF. Some have a triangular shaped ring at the top, others are flat.

    Best bet is put a K&N on the end of the air horn.

    Read the link I posted.

    You might be able to take it apart with the intention of never putting it back. I dunno.

    3B page says it doesn't come apart. Well, I guess not if you want it to go back together like I said. ;)

    Hey dishwolf, has the oil splashing you mentioned caused a problem somehow? I mean has it leaked out? I've always had the understanding the oil bath is a better filtration system, it's definitely more suitable for offroad where mud or water splashing could be a problem.

    I'm with Glenn on this one. Unless it's leaking I'd keep the oil bath aircleaner. I switched mine over to a paper filter and didn't like what I was seeing, so I went back to the oil bath.

    No leakage problem, I just assumed that since it was an older way of air filtration that was no longer used, it was outdated, and current methods would be better. Guess I'll stick with what I've got. Been working okay since '66 - carb's never been rebuilt, and she runs fine with good gas mileage. Now if I could only get the sending unit to indicate accurately. Fill 'er up, and 4 gallons later the gauge reads empty (10.5 gallon tank under the seat)...I can bend the float support rod, but it'll still go through the scale (full to empty) too quickly. The float rod needs to be lengthened so it takes longer to go through the scale, but how ?? Been thinking on this for a while...
