OK, so I've been racking my slow brain as to the cheapest way to set up a paint booth in my driveway to paint the clip parts and tub. I was going to use PVC piping for a frame and painting tarp plastic for a cover but found this thing on e-Bay (and there are others) for $20.00!! I just buy some cheap tarp plastic and pin it around the sides and a fan with filters. http://cgi.ebay.com/10x10-Canopy-10...401029473QQcategoryZ20721QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

What are your thoughts? Do you think this thing will go??

    Thanks,
    Rit

I'm planning to be more "Dutch" yet...and just use the HVLP gun (less overspray) in the backyard with no booth.

My CJ5 (and several other cars) were painted this way by my Dad, and other than the occaisonal bug getting into the paint they looked fine.

10' x10' doesn't leave you a whole lot of room. I had about 10' x 15', and it was a somewhat tight squeeze on the narrow sides....

Ain't you got some plumber friends you can "borrow" the pvc from? :D

I'm very close to having to do this thing also. One of the features of our new place is a "boat garage" that has a dirt floor and provides about a 12 foot wide space by 50 feet long. Since I plan to paint the jeep by parts, I am faced with a way to support/suspend the parts for the process.

But until I get past the rust elimination phase, this process can remain as a "to do". However, If I take too long, the process of moving additional (junk) stuff into this space will marginalize what area will be left for the real paint part.

    FOR JZ:

Doesn't Redstone have a paint booth on the installation. You must know someone that works there and could get you in. Mine cost me 40.00 for the day. Plenty o time.

Also, there was a great thread not too far back that covered this in depth.

The only reason I need a booth is because in CT we're covered with trees everywhere, like a canopy. All the junk just drops all over not to mention the bugs. I found out what happens when you try to paint at 90% humidity when I painted the filter canister. It had a flat finish on some areas. The paint can says to paint in less than 60% humidity, 70% is a dry day in CT but it seems to work OK. Yeah Mike, all I do is study paint guns and stuff. The more I dig the more I find out I know less and less about it. I think you're right, at some point ya gotta just say I'm doing it this way.

I do have a friend who has a well business and he said he had a truck load of 1" PVC he was going to dump so he would drop off some for me. Never saw it and it's been 4 weeks.:(

Thanks, I like seeing everybodys ideas.

Paint in the fall- Dryer air, fewer bugs... I'm not sure the humidity has been less than 90% in Alabama in the last 100 years! At least in the Summer.. Seriously, early fall is perfect for outdoor painting. Maybe after the leaves have fallen though

Paint stores carry an additive for high humidity conditions that you mix in the paint.

Here is what I did. I painted a VW Bug in my garage a couple of years ago. I built a 10 x 18 frame out of 2x4's. I sheeted this in with plastic and used strapping and duct tape to seal it. I left one side so that it was could roll it up to move pieces in and out. I then used a 12v car radiator fan(because it is explosion proof). I then built a box to hold 4 household air conditioner filters, From the inside the air flowed directly into the filters and on the outside it flowed from 2 dryer vent hoses into a bucket of water. ( I live in a neighborhood with HOA so I had to try to limit fumes and dust). This worked real well but looked like the scene from E.T when the house was covered ina bubble:) No overspray on the rest of the garage and no dust in my paint. The plastic statically attracted small dust and inside and kept the rest out. Check out the following link for pics

    Hope this helps

My wife came up with a great idea last night, since the back deck is 8 ft off of the ground just line an area under the deck with plastic sheet. The best part is nobody can see what's going on there, just the aroma will be in the air.
