OK if you read my last thread "Turns over but won't start" is it possible to check the timing without starting the engine, since mine won't start? I'm thinking no... I guess its time to take it to a shop. :flag: :v6:

First, have you moved the distributor since it last ran?

If not I'd pretty much rule that out as an issue.

If you have start inching it forward and see if advancing it helps it start.

    You know you have fuel?

    The distributor.

Do you have fuel? Has it been out since it last ran?

I do have fuel... when I moove the throttle on the carb... fuel comes out. If I hold a spark plug, should I see a spark when cranking without holding it near metal?

Gotta hold the plug close to metal - a ground point - to give the spark a path...

No, spark plug has to be grounded for it to spark.

So in other words, just holding it will not produce a spark jumping the gap. I am using bosch platinum plugs, they were reccomended to me, are there issues with those spark plugs?

Well to ruff it in get the #1 piston to TDC and line your distribtor cap number 1 wire position to the rotor button. I normaly do that by takeing a marker and marking the place where the #1 postion on the cap onto the metal part of the distrib. That way when you take the cap off you will be able to tell where the #1 wire would be at.Now you should be able to line your marker mark up with the end of the rotor by turning the distrib. Then turn the distribitor a hair back aginst the rotation (advance the timing) ,that should get it running if there are no problems.
(edit: 2 or 3 times to make sense R))
