I was looking over the Project Hatari article (link form Boyinks website) and was wondering...

I was looking at the rim and tire selection that they had put on the CJ-6 and the article stated that the rims were "stock". I'm assuming 15x5.5. I attached some pic of the Jeep, what size tires do you all think the tires are? I'm thinking 31x10.5, but not sure. I attached some pics, don't know if you can tell form them or not.

I was supprised by how much a face lift a set of new springs gave that Jeep. Almost looks like a little lift.

Also, anyone have experience with retreads? I looked up the manufacturer (www.high-tec-retreading.com) that they used on the Hatari CJ and for the amount of actual use and miles that I use my 6 they don't look like a bad option for the price (five tires=$350 w/ shipping).

I'm thinking of going to a little larger tire, but want to keep a more stock look to things. I really like what they did to that Jeep in the article. Paint it red primer and it could be my 6.

    Hey Brad,
They are 31x10.50s. I too was suprised how high it seems to sit with the new replacement springs. It's hard to tell for sure, but it seems to sit as high if not higher than my '5 with 2.5" Superlift springs. I think it has a nice stance to it.

The rims are 15x6-inch. Only the spare is 15x5.5 and I'd be a little nervous running it for any length of time. Too narrow for the tire in my opinion.

The front springs are the thicker HD packs and they did lift it a bunch. Probably 2-inches over the stock broken and sagged springs. I've been waiting for them to settle, but they're holding. I'm adding a 6000lb winch on the front pretty soon, so we'll see what that does.

As for the retreads, I haven't really been able to put that many miles on them yet, but I'm about to drive the rig up to the Rubicon and back from San Diego, so I should be able to give them a good workout and develop an opinion of their long-range over the road performance.

Driving to Rubicon and back from San Diego in some what stock CJ6? That will be a great article read.
Christian, in spite of Cappa's big mouth I might just get a subscription to JP again!

P.S. Can you strap Cappa in that chair you made for him for the trip????;)

    Christian,

I kinda thought stock rims were a little narrow for 31s. I'd be interested to know how those tires hold up for you, though.

I run 11.50's on 7" wheels - have had this setup for at least 7 years with no issues other than a larger sidewall bulge hitting the springs sooner when turning. Other than that I like the way the rim is well-protected by the sidewall.

A 6000 pound winch would make my F-350 front end drag on the pavement, can't imagine that much weight on a jeep :D  :D

I agree. I ran 32x11.50s on stock 15x7 rims for about 10 years and 220,000-miles on my '85 Ramcharger. Never had any issues, so I'm figuring the 10.50s on 15x6s will behave the same way.

You think that that 1/2" will make a difference from a 5.5" to a 6" rim?

I run 30x9.50s on 15x5.5 rims with no issues. I would really like to go to 31x10.50s but I thought that would be pushing things a little.

I have run 32x11.50s on 15x7 and 15x8 with no issues either way.

9.50s on 5.5 and 11.50s on 7 both equal a 4.5 difference tire to wheel width. My opinion both a pushing the limit but as I said it has worked out fine.

I also like the looks/price of the retread tires. Looking forward to a long term report on them.

I have a set of 35x12.50s on a 7" wheel, and just remounted my 35x14.50 Boggers on 8" beadlocks. Over 20K miles on the pair of setups over the years. Of course, the amount of sidewall you have will make a difference in how narrow you can go.

I had problems with rubbing on the narrow rim with 31x11.5's. Went to a 10 in. rim and much better. I am also interested in how those retreads hold up in the long run.
Sure enjoy all the work you guys put into the mag. Have been getting it for years. My favorite stuff is all the old iron. It broke my heart to see Cappa send his old cj2a to the dump.
