I think I've seen a couple of posts on the forums here wherein guys have mentioned an MSD ignition setup for the L-134? Can anyone enlighten me a bit on this? I'm looking to do the Pertronix distributor conversion, so would all of this work together nicely with a Solex and cleaned-up exhaust manifold to give me a couple extra HP to help turn some 33's until I can get the V6 swap squared away?

In a word yes. Dont expect a power house by any strech though.;)
Jacobs also makes a nice kit like the MSD.

Certainly no power house expectations here :D But, I am hoping to notice SOME sort of improvement... I can get a slightly used 6A box for next to nothing, but the rest will be retail. I guess I'll report a little before and after

Read a dyno test once that showed like a 6hp gain just with MSD box.
Cleaning up the exhaust would be the 1st step I'd do. ;)

What motor was that 6hp gain on? Man, if we could score 6hp from the L-134, that would be a 10% increase!!!!

I have had great luck in the past with cleaning up cast exhaust manifolds. The castings are typically very "dirty" and not always closely matched to the ports. Gaskets are another sore spot, and very easily fixed to improve exhaust flow. A Dremel tool with the flexible wand and a flapper head work great!!

Switching to a V6 eventually? Leave the L-134 stock Dist /coil in there, dont waste the money. A well tuned 62HP L-134 turns my 33" tires just fine at 50 MPH and on the trail. Just keep a spare spark plug handy.... (Ask me how I know  )

    [edit] oh and... ahem...picked up about 5 MPH when I tossed a K&N filter on my L-134. <shameless self promotion, sry> ;) [/edit]

Already have a K&N, did that one a while back. I think the shaved weight from dumping the oil bath assembly helped more than the airflow increase ;)

As for the MSD, I can use the box and coil on any motor I end up with, so that won't be a total loss. The Pertronix upgrade, however, will be a loss eventually. But, I'm interested to see how it works anyways. Unless they have really jumped in price, I think the conversion is only around $90 or something?

I found this thread as I was searching around.... so did you ever get around to trying out the MSD ignition and the pertronix pickup? If so, how'd it turn out?

Also curious for those that have oil bath air cleaners, how feasible would it be to swap in a K&N type cone shaped element, but still keep the outer oil bath canister? I kind of like how the old canisters look and wouldn't mind picking one up some time, but I also like the idea of running a K&N style filter (seems like they'd be a little less restrictive).

I currently have a 6" paper element with an aluminum pie pan on top of it (previous owner installed).

i had a msd 6al and petronix when i first rebuilt my motor. The cap and rotor kept melting. I tried a few different ballast resistors and different ways to wire it but i couldnt get the burn trail to stop so now i just use the petronix. I also have an accel coil

I've been running a Pertronix kit and an MSD-5 on my stock L-head for over a year with no ill effects. Cooked a coil at Windrock, but that was unrelated to the mods, more of an old age issue methinks. The Pertronix certainly idles much smoother than the points did (even in a brandy-new NOS distributor) and the MSD made enough of a difference that I actually had to turn my idle down about 150 RPM.

I think that they are both very worthwhile.

I've got a MSD 6 on my F134 and have been very happy with it. I use the points in the distribuitor to trigger the MSD box. Since the current going through the points is only a small amount the points last forever. Starting is easier too. My only comment is that the MSD box makes a high pitched electronic noise. Probably wouldn't notice that if it and the coil wasn't mounted under the dash though.

Hi, I'm a newb here, but not to Jeeps. I pulled the hacked 24v distributor from my M38A1 and swapped in a regular L-134 dist in. But yesterday, I found this:

A complete, new, solid-state distributor for F and L-134! Mine is ordered and on the way. Here is the link, and no I don't work for them! $125 and $18 shipping - a 5% online coupon at top of the first page.

Please let us know how you like the product. Looks like a great deal to get the whole thing new.
Maybe a pic or two with the cap off.

It came in the mail yesterday. I'm not sure when I'll get it installed. Next job is to fix the broken rear-end, then fuel tank. I'll try to get some more pics this weekend.

How easy is it to install the pertronix system? It looks like a really good upgrade. I guess i will also get a new coil as well, maybe a high proformance Accel? Is there any thing people should look out for when upgrading their coil? Is there such thing as too "high proformance"?

The Pertronix is an easy install. It just replaces the breaker points. Keep points in glove box in case of failure...

Not sure how easy/$ parts are for the replacement distributor, and hope I won't need to find out...

Yea, but if you have to have (2) it's not such a bargain at that point. I think they have a 2 year warranty? I got at least 5 years out of my first one in my old 240Z. I'll never put the kind of miles on the jeep as I did the Z so hopefully it won't need replacing? (Wishful thinking ?)
