Jeep appears to be running pretty good now but after a ride, I have the scent of 'fumes'. My wife says I smell like gas but I think it smells like exhaust fumes (Brian, do not asked if I smelled like this beforehand! ). My question is this:

Since the driver sits on the gas tank, are early CJ5 owners destined to smell like fuel? I have a replacement tank in excellent condition but perhaps vapors are still escaping. :? Or...

My jeep body is an after-market metal body and the hole for the shifter and the pedals seems over-sized. Should I fabricate some sort of rubber boot to close off the gaps to prevent fumes from the headers? :?

Any thoughts based on previous experiences are appreciated.

If we're ever in the same bar, I'll be the one smelling like exhaust fumes! :D

On the actual subject matter, is your tank under your seat or in the rear? I'm really leaning to exhaust fumes since I have a new gas tank but still not 100% sure.

Underseat, but I've got a grand total of maybe a 1/4 mile on my Jeep before she came apart.

Just talkin out my rear, though, I don't think you should be smelling of exhaust OR gas after driving the Jeep unless something was wrong. Start it up and put it in neutral, the pop the hood and look around everywhere for an exhaust leak. Check the fuel lines, too.

I had a gas leak on my explorer once that took me forever to find. Every time I got out of my truck I smelled gas, but I could never find a leak. After doing some repairs I had it sitting in the garage, it was leaking like a seive. Turns out a line off my fuel pump was shot, only leaked when the fuel pump was on.:rofl:

Maybe someone else has some better suggestions, but imho you shouldn't be noticably smelling like that...

Another thought - what do you have under your tank between it and the body? Something you can check to see if you've got any wetness?

I doubt a new tank would be leaking, but maybe a fitting somewhere aint just right.

Yeah, I've checked for actual fuel leaks. If it's the fuel, then it is fuel fumes. Another reason why I'm leaning towards the exhaust. The PO installed headers and I think it may be leaking and coming from the holes for the pedals and shifter. I also pick up some road heat from these holes.

Until you figure this out, I would recommend not smoking while driving. R)

I've got the same issue, but my tank is in the rear. I'm guessing it's just exhaust. Guy before put 2 muffles w/ no pipe right under the doorways. If I ain't moving it fills up w/ the cologne really fast. I also have a bunch of holes from crappy wiring jobs through the firewall... got me nervous now thinking of a fuel leak. :(

My wife, bless her heart, was riding in the JEEP with me one day last year. We were out in the country and I smelled a fire burning. I looked at her and said, "Do you smell that brush pile burning?" Her reply............. "I thought it was just another JEEP smell." I just shook my head ...

Yeppers. In fact for that really irresistable look that'll drive the women wild, head to deer camp with the Jeep, come back after having not shaved or showered for a few days, with just a spash of buck blood, a little doe urine, and the Jeep fumes, you'll have to beat them off with a stick!!!

    Man I love crack.

Well, at this point, it sounds as if I am not alone so let me rephrase the original question: Has anyone successfully eliminated or reduced the vapor/smell from the early CJ5? If so, what was addressed and how?

As I stated previously, I am considering getting some sheet rubber and some tin metal and fabricating 'boots' to go around exposed openings for pedals and shifter. Anyone else gone down this road before with words of wisdom?

The same thing happened with my '78 5 and '85 7... and certainly the '62 5.
When the top is off, I'm sure you feel the buffetting from behind. And if you've ever driven in the rain w/ a bikini top, you know how the wind whips up from behind and gets the spray on the inside of the windshield... Well, my guess is that same air is bringing some exhaust fumes with it.
I never had a problem with either TJ... the '99 Sport or '04 Rubi. I don't know if it's because the fuel injection lets it run a little leaner and/or the 4.0 is more efficient, if it's the benefits of the emissions stuff on later vehicles or if it's just what small changes in aerodynamics. But my guess is most of it is coming from behind and not through the floors.
Maybe carb adjustment and changing the mix will change the exhaust enough to make it less noticable?
    Just my $0.02...
