Finally got done pulled apart the motor. I have the timing chain ordered and tomorrow i am going to take the heads into the rebuild place.

I didnt have a blown head gasket, that was just fine. I had a small chip on a piston on the passenger side in the front, this is the cylidner i dont have a low compresssion on, and the piston seems fine, it may have been like that for a while. The rest of the pistons and bores looked pretty durn good, the #1 cylinder had alot of carbon on the piston compared to the others, it is flaking off even, as seen in the pictures. As for the heads, the driver side looked actually very good. The passenger side didnt look too bad, but there was one very "light" colored valve in th ehead, in the center cylinder.

Only other observation i saw was that two of th elifters where kind of out of the boreds, but it was because of the cam lobe is pushing them up.

Another question i have is do i havae to remove the water pump to remove the timnig cover? It looks like i do not have to, but jsut want to make sure.

I also pulled out the distributer, and it looks to be fine, how do i check for a broken "pin" that was suggested in another post?

While i am at it, i guess i am going to install a new fuel pump for preventiuve maintence.

    Here are the pics.

Dan if the 4.1 is like the Dauntless you will have 2 long bolts going thru the pump into the block, if you remove these and leave the short ones in the timing cover housing you may be able to leave it attached to the cover. There is no real reason to remove it so long as you remove the right bolts.

Dan that so called chip, I'm not sure about as most Buick pistons will have a notch on one side of the piston that is suppose to face toward the front of the block.

You can take a punch and drive the pin out of the distributor gear and make sure it comes out in 1 piece and isn't bent all to pieces, you can get a replacement split pin at FLAPS for about 50 cents, cheap insurance, make sure you put it back on the right way..

The flaking carbon is from running the engine to rich, which the way these engine run in the woods would be normal, most carb'd engines run a little on the rich side at idle and lean out more as the rpm climbs. Running rich will also help keep the heat down while running at low speed in the woods where there is less air moving across the radiator.

I would make sure that the carbon build up on the heads was not oily.

The heads are not oily, excpet for the passenger middle and rear, only becuse those are the two cylinders that are weaker, and those are the two cylinder that all the engine oil flooded into when i rolled on my side. I have the timing cover off now. i am wondering if this is an effort in futility. The timing chain didnt seem to be oddly loose at all. the tensioner is present and keepnig good tension on the chain. i will swap it since i am this far. So i will take the heads to get cleaned and worked on. I really havent found a main cause in my timenig jumping and miss fire. I did check the dist cap and the rotor had a little barbon on it, but i dont think enoguh to shange the timnig.

Is the pin you are talknig about the rolled pin that holds the gear in place? If it is, mine looks to be in excellent shape. This distributer was new abotu 5 years ago.

Is that an illusion or do I see 3 different kinds of pistons?

All 6 of my pistons had a notch like that. Strange that only one of yours does. As McRuff said, that indicates which direction the piston is supposed to face.

Dan - if you put her on her side check your cam lobes - especially if you had oil leak down into the cyl. The last one we had do that ended up with a flattened cam lobe due to the hydro preasure - he turned the engine over with oil still in the cyl.

Just a thought while you have it that far down.

Nope no notches. the mtor has bee rebuilt about .030 over. I took the heads in today and the guy will call me back. I was thinknig bout looking at the cam on the motor. Once i have the timing gears off, is it that easy to get the cam out? How do i remove the cam to check?? HHHMM I wonder if this is a good time to swap cams. I wonder if they make an offroad cam. HHHMMM

Now is the time for the cam - get a puller/installer setup (buy if you do more than one or freebe loaner at FLAPS). Swap bearings as well if your going to do it. The RV grind in my boys gives a real low RPM power grunt band. Stock is just a tad higher RPM power band than RV.

The last I looked for the 258, Crane had the best price. IMO you won't go wrong with Crane, Isky, Comp Cams, Crower ... probably others I'm overlooking. You can get an RV cam from your local parts store too; brands like SpeedPro and Federal-Mogul, well-known manufacturers of hard parts. The Summit cams are/were popular with the 360 V8 crowd, although there were some problems with them for a while.

Don't go too wild - the major manufacturers (esp. Comp Cams) will have a good description of the appropriate app for a specific cam. If you buy a new cam, they'll offer to sell you a package with lifters and cam.
