I am wondering about fitting a fenderwell sbc header in my 1961 CJ5. I have access to a set for the 1972 and up set. I know that folks have cited the length as a possible fitment issue, as my '61 is a bit shorter than the '72. However, what about steering box clearance? Will that be an issue, or did the '72's also have the frame rail mounted steering box? Anyone ever put these headers on an early CJ with the little steering box I am referring to? Thanks in advance, Dave Meyers.

The steering box probably will be an issue unless you convert to Saginaw steering like the Intermediate Jeeps had.

I replied to your email about these. I installed them without a problem on my 67 cj5 with a chevy v8. the only thing I had to do for clearance was a light trim to the inner fender well, but would have had to trim the fender wells for the correct headers as well. I cannot place the steering box on your jeep , but I think the headers are swept forward enough to clear if my memory serves me right

Follow up to my own question. I mocked up the intermediate CJ5 sbc fenderwell headers on my early CJ5. They will need a little massaging to fit around the steering box, but I think it will work. Tilt front end will need trimming too, of course.
